Rex Ambassador owner thread

Upon receipt I commented in the group buy thread that “This thing is every bit as beautiful and as much a piece of art as advertised. This is a good looking, well designed razor, and I’m really pleased.” Now, after my first shave I have a few more thoughts.
First, this is a really substantial razor (i.e. heavy and well built). In fact, it’s probably the heaviest razor I own, but it’s not bulky or clumsy at all. I really like the heft to it. The weight of the head means you don’t need to apply pressure at all, as the razor does all the work. You just need to provide the skill. It has a good handle length and is well balanced. Someone mentioned they’d like a longer handle, but it’s already a touch longer than the Gillette adjustables, and any more length would make it bottom heavy in my opinion. I also really like the low profile cap, and like the feel it provides, keeping me aware of blade angle. For me “feel” is a good thing; “drag” is not. FWIW, I don’t detect any of the latter at all.
One shave is a bit early to make a call, but so far, this one gives me the same satisfaction I get when looking at and using a well crafted and artistically designed Swiss watch.

Do we see another group buy in the making?

I’m interested in picking up this razor, and if I did, it’d be the first dial-a-gap style I own.

Traditionally, I do not like mechanical complexity in a razor, such as TTO’s or twist-adjusted types.

Looking at the Rex’s pictures on the Emporium site, it looks like the handle barrel is press fitted into the mechanical head...

...instead of being machined out of solid SS, or welded to the head. I would be leery about anything press fitted, and would be concerned about play development in that area over time.

Difficult to be sure from the pictures.

Can anyone weigh in on this?

No it’s not press fitted at all. The handle screws onto the head. We just use thread lock to keep it on as our prototyping indicated that consumers were confused when it would come apart unintentionally.

When we service the razor we use a small jewelers torch to heat the joint up and it comes off without problem.

On another note, Gillette adjustables have been around for over half a century and the Gibbs, which predates the Gillette’s have been working flawlessly and continue to do so. A testament to each manufacturers design, engineering and manufacturing prowess.

Perhaps not simple in design as you would perhaps be less comfortable with a more complex creation, but certainly tried and trued by the millions who have used them. They’ve withstood the test of time so far and I believe the REX wouldn’t be any different.

As always to each their own. The K.I.S.S. method has always been proven to be best for most.

Mine sat in the mailbox for two days until I returned and took it for a test drive. I’m very tired, so for now I’ll just say “wow”!

Just a spring, a screw and a nut. Very simple and hard to mess up. The tolerances of all of these components is the tricky part.

Shave number two was smooth and close on setting three with a GSB. This is a very forgiving razor.  So far,  I couldn't be happier.
