Yes, I find using Proraso preshave to be extremely helpful on the first pass. I have shaved with and without Proraso preshave and I definitely prefer shaving with it. It seems to provide cushion that I need on the first pass. I do not use preshave on the second and third passes.

I find that a great pre shave can greatly enhance any soap or cream.
That said....I found that most of them really don’t work well for me. The only one that has worked great for me is from...https://www.groomingdept.com/collections/pre-shave

Like frenchy, I'm a big fan of Grooming Dept's pre-shave product. I use it most every day. The only other one I like (and I've tried a bunch) is Myrsol Emulsion.

I should add that I haven't tried the Cube from PAA, but I find their aftershaves to be stellar. I've got a dozen or so of them, and enjoy them all.

I’ve had best luck with either Grooming Dept or CeraVe SA Cleanser

EDIT (02/29/2020):  After gaining more experience, I stopped using the CeraVe as a preshave.  (It is a fine facial cleanser, and I still wash with it.)

I've used a number of commercial and homemade preshave products, and while I am not completely convinced, I suspect that they do help me to get a really smooth shave. Currently I use a touch of Noxzema Classic Clean deep cleansing cream, rinsing it off just before applying my lather.
