One would think the use of the single blade might hamper sales but my conclusion has always been that the target demographics for this product means that in general, the consumer doesn't really care about the price per blade. As you say, its pennies.
You'd think the engineers who built the razor would know someone would figure out how to use other blades. The only thing I would fear for them is that if someone seriously cut themselves using a blade not designed for the razor, I wonder if they leave themselves upon to a lawsuit. I have no idea.
