Ikon X3 Slant

The AS-D1 was my first high end razor and I still own and use it regularly.  I don't know what guys are talking about when they say it doesn't cut.  I get a near BBS in 2 trouble free passes.  It looks as good as the day I bought it too.

The makers of the Feather razor have never publicly called me a Moron either....at least not that I've seen.

I sold my AS/D2 because I prefer lighter razor ( due to an ongoing shoulder problem). But it was a fantastic and very unique razor. Once my shoulder is fixed, I will probably buy one again. The other feather product I have is my most favorite razor/ shaving system. So I am a feather fan too.

You should try pairing the AS-D2 with a titanium or aluminium handle and see if it makes a difference although its likely more the weight of your arm that is causing the pain.  Only someone who has shoulder issues will truly understand your situation.  I've had 2 rotator cuff repairs, one 5 years ago and one 15 years ago and I have to get the 15 year shoulder done again.  I'm still managing to shave but certain angles on certain parts of my face don't feel very good in the shoulder and I'm sleeping on only one side.  You've probably been told already but shoulder surgeries are quite painful and there is the 4-6 weeks in a sling 24/7.  Proper rehab is critical to regaining full use of the shoulder.  On the up side, the morphine in recovery and the pain killers are pretty good  I wish you a speedy recovery.

I'm planning on getting my first slant...just to see what a slant is all about.   I'm looking for something that will give me a very close shave -- a slant version of my Fatip.

From my experience with the X3, you can get a relatively close shave, but while getting there, it can feel as if the razor isn’t doing much. I’d say it’s a rather mild razor, but if you play with the blades and the angle, it does a decent job.

In my opinion, nay. I've only used the X3 twice so far, but it's nowhere near the Fatip in efficiency. Maybe I didn't have the angle nailed (though I did try several different angles), but it took way too many passes and touch-ups to get the closeness to which I'm accustomed. I even switched blades, to see if that would help (Astra SP on day 1, Feather on day 2), but it was still too mild/inefficient for me. It reminds me very much of the ShaveCraft 101 & 102, which I also found to be much too mild for my liking. My preference is for more aggressive/efficient razors, and since you want something like the Fatip, it would appear that you're in the same camp.

I'll try it a few more times, but I'm not terribly optimistic. I would recommend looking elsewhere, based on what you stated.

I would have to cast my vote on the yay side. I like my X3, its smooth yet efficient, not quite as smooth as the #102 which is just such a nice razor for me. I load it with a Feather blade and away I go, a smooth, comfortable drama free BBS shave. What more could I ask for. If you prefer living on the edge of disaster with the ever present risk of exsanguination staring you down then by all means, try a more aggressive slant like the merkur 37C or the ATT.

Yup, been out a month or so and widely available. You can buy the head and handle combination (approx $36) or just the head (approx $29) and use one of your own handles. Its a very nice razor and excellent value too.

I'm with you man, I love my AS-D2 and loaded with a Feather blade it does a very efficient job at getting me a BBS shave.

Too late now...I purchased one and I used it once.   I agree with you, it is not as efficient as the Fatip.   It did, however, give a smoother shave.

I'll try a Feather tomorrow.    The X3 is not a bad razor, but I expected it (and slants) to be more efficient.    I do like it though -- I don't think I'll be selling it.   I will try an R41 next just to see how it compares to the Fatip.
