Ok so it seems I may have to look into a balm to use after the alum bar. I'm pretty sure I'm not using pressure, because the 34c is heavy as it is. The lather I feel I'm still doing right. I do circles on the soap until I get a good fluffy white morang with peaks. When I apply it on my face I do a light circle motion to get it on my face then dip lightly in the mug of water as needed. I finish off doing painting strokes. When it's all done I have a slick thick white layer of soap on my face. When I shave the razor seems to glide without a problem.

As from the advice above, I may just do 2 passes on my neck (grain and against) while keeping 3 on the face. The neck area under my chin is what gave me the issue when I did a side pass on the left and right.

Also I tried the Nick Shaves technique. When he finishes shaving, he rubs the soap on his face and feels around for rough areas and does a razor touch up. I'm thinking this may have also caused some additional irritation.

don't go against the grain. if you're going to do 2 passes, try WTG (with the grain) and XTG (across the grain) to see how it does for you.

Back in the dark days when I used cartridges I shaved once a week on a Sunday night before work, since shaving with a proper kit I started shaving three times a week doing a 3 pass shave and always getting it dolphin smooth.
I'm fortunate in that I can shave at bedtime and 8 hours later in the morning I'll still have BBS but as my journey continued I shaved a lot more purely because I wanted to, so these days I'll shave Monday to Friday and maybe on a Saturday but only a 2 pass shave if I'm shaving every day otherwise my skin will let me know all about it.

As Andrew said, don't shave ATG for awhile. Try two passes on the sensitive area under your chin, one with and one across. That's a sensitive area for me as well, and I have to be careful when going ATG there. Give the area a chance to heal. And try some balm. There are many good, inexpensive choices. Proraso, Nivea, Ginger's Garden (balm or aftershaves--her aftershaves have a lot of the properties of a balm), Reef Point, Soap Commander, etc. RazorRock makes its own line of balms, which have never worked for me but I've read good reviews so they might be worth a try as they're quite inexpensive and they have good strong fragrances. Look for a balm without parabens. Finally, after you shave, soak a facecloth in cold water and apply that to the sensitive area and hold it there for half a minute. I saw that in a barber video and like it a lot, it calms down the face. Keep us posted.

Every day. Three passes plus buffing. If my technique is off, my skin will tell me and I'll drop back to two passes for a day or two. I use Thayer's alcohol free WH and...wait for it...Oil Of Olay. Okay...you can laugh now. My dermatologist recommended it a few years ago and I like the stuff. It's not greasy and it doesn't clog my pores.

What's to laugh at? As I've stated before, so many things in the shaving/cosmetics/scent world can be unisex. If it works then why not use it?

Yeah, I don't mind if people get a chuckle from it though. I've tried balms in the past and I just don't like the feel of them. Oil of Olay is light and absorbs quickly.

If it isn't broken, don't fix it. How's the price of the olay; isn't that stuff usually expensive?

I really don't know. My wife buys it at the grocery store so I imagine it's inexpensive.
