The blade is a personal thing, hard to help you there. I typically start with my favorite in any razor in using for the first time.

Regarding the setting, probably best to start lower and move up as needed. I'm going to ask for help from BBS here in hopes he can better guide you... He seems to be a razor traditionalist. I don't know who else here may have experience with a slim.

I would start with the middle setting and adjust from there.

I don't find the Slim an aggressive razor at any setting but then again I use single edge razors more so these days. When you use single edge razors long enough DE blades become like child's toys in comparison except when using them in shavettes. They just don't have the same bite and feel on the face once you get acclimated to thicker and sharper blades.

Starting in the middle or lower settings is good practice but I'll also add starting at the highest setting also has it's advantages. If you find it unsatisfactory .i.e. too mild or not close enough of a shave you want on 9 you already know the razor is not for you. Turning in down won't make it shave better. Being too aggressive and close enough is good and that tells you somewhere lower will be satisfactory plus allows the razor to keep pace with you as your shaving skills improve. They will improve if you take shaving seriously regardless of how good you may think you are with a razor.

Razor arrived today.  Smile Thank you Paul, once again for your generosity. Just completed the first shave tonight. Used a Feather razor blade and setting 5. Very smooth,  very little irritation, one stupidity weeper on the chin. Could’ve used a little touch up but that was on me for being cautious with a new razor—didn’t want to push it. Overall an excellent experience.

I made a Decision on my second Double edged razor purchase. I bought a Rex Envoy from a fellow DFS member. I received it last night and had my first shave. Initial impressions, razor handle is really short. Stand is really large. First shave was not very pleasant, one nick, two weepers, lots of irritation. Can’t really judge as it’s only been one shave and quite a bit different from my timeless aluminum that I have been using. Really need to concentrate on technique and difference in weight of razors.

I would sell the Envoy and buy the $55 RazoRock Gamechanger .84 SB. That would be my second after the Rockwell 6S, but the GC is slimmer head profile and prettier. Just my .2 cents

Also the Envoy didn’t work for me as well.
