This was really perplexing for me as I had never had such a bad lather with MW.  As a matter of fact, I consider it one of my top 3 soaps...both in terms of performance and scents.  But at least i now have a much better understanding of when people say they have a hard time getting good lathers with MW.
Thanks Matsilainen for the info....I now know to always use a synthetic with MW.
BTW, I still paired it up with Gratiot League Square.  Once I did, everything was right in the world  Happy2
Sorry to hear your experiment kind of confirmed my experiences, but glad to hear it all turned out OK in the end. Obviously everyone’s experiences are a little different, but whenever I hear someone mention water quality in connection with Mystic Water Soap, I always want to shout: “Don’t worry about the water — try a synthetic brush, or increase the loading time of your natural hair brush!”

I believe celestino has conducted tests with Mystic Water Soap on various types of hard water, and has been able to lather the soap well, using his badger hair brushes. Anyway, we probably should have taken this portion of the conversation over to a Mystic thread, but oh well…

As for more tobacco-scented soaps, can’t remember if they’ve been mentioned yet, but I have heard good things about Van Yulay’s Black Cavendish, Cherry Tobacco and Club Humidor soaps.

Okay, I've had this a few weeks now. I have to say, I'm a little disappointed. Now, that's only because I have a very similar scent which I feel is better: Beaver Woodwright Captain's Pipe. What's interesting is that Cattie's didn't mention the cherry aspect at all. These two are so similar it makes me wonder if there are premixed scent concoctions available from suppliers which both soaps use.

Most likely. There are many sources for proprietary fragrance oil blends that can be used as is, or for custom blending.

Catties Bubbles Connecticut Shade is a strong tobacco scent, very nice and well made scent IMO but I'm sure there are people out there that may not care for the scent, it is different from many tobacco scents out there.

Santa Maria Novella - after the menthol and eucalyptus scents subside you are left with a very faint tobacco toscana scent.

The SMN Tobacco Toscana cologne runs at $135 a pop - however, RazoRock Santa Maria del Fiore aftershave is a fabulous alternative, and compliments the SMN cream.

I have only just purchased my first tub of SMN - and I have shaved three times with the (amazing) stuff. I then apply Proraso green aftershave balm, and then the RR Santa Maria del Fiore splash.

Lovely!

Anyone try RR's Puros scent?

Not sure how new it is, as I recall they experiments with tobacco #1 & #2 in the past. I still have Zi' Peppino Green Tobacco which is a lovely green tobacco scent and a strong performer especially considering the price.

So tonight’s shave was with Mystic Water Soap Sweet Briar (old formula). Used a two-band badger brush. And had some perplexing difficulties with the lather, even though I thought I truly loaded enough soap. The problems really began when I added just a little water, after face lathering for a moment. Most soaps would benefit from some drops of water at this point, incorporating it for added sheen and slickness. But Sweet Briar took the water and turned itself into a worthless foam.

Loaded some more soap onto the brush. Got decent coverage, but by then the fragrance oil soap began to cause a slight sensation of heat on the skin. If that weren’t enough, the problem of dissipating lather soon followed… Just a few days ago, I had once again watched Merkur Man’s excellent video on lathering Mystic Water Soap. I felt as if the shave gods (or devils?) were somewhere nearby, mocking me for ever thinking I could accomplish such a feat.

Thankfully, I got the lather somewhat stabilized for the next pass (by once again loading more — in the end, I used almost 4 grams of soap for this shave). I never have issues with Mystic’s slickness, as it is always tops. The great post-shave feel is also a big plus, after all of the minuses. And finally, the scent of Sweet Briar is just wonderful.

So in the end, I feel good about the shave, but this wasn’t a simple or easy one! I had remembered HoosierShave’s tip from all those months ago, and used Chatillon Lux Gratiot League Square as my post-shave. What a great idea!
