Here you say, "I could shave for the rest of my days with a EJ DE89, twenty five cent blades, semogue boar brush and tub of Stirling soap with Thayer WH post product. "OK, with that definition of mainstream then yes, we are probably more in agreement than not. I haven't really been paying attention to the crazy high end stuff because it doesn't interest me. I enjoy a good shave and some discussion and banter on this forum. I watch the occasional Dave in KY video because I like Dave and his shave videos remind me of episodes of The Friendly Giant. They're peaceful and soothing. The very opposite of the fomo inducing frantic you gotta have this latest yada yada yada videos. I get that some guys love that stuff and that's great, there's room here for everyone.
I consider those "mass market" products. I know that they are not Gillette, but I don't consider them "artisan" either.
Maybe my definition was imprecise. Perhaps I should have said, "mainstream"?
I don't want to get too specific because I don't want to bash anybody's favorite products. That is a good way to ruffle feathers. So without getting too specific this is what I mean when I said that "A lot of these products are crap. They are not any better than mass market products,". I have bought well known $30.00 soaps that were not as good as a $12.00 puck of the old tallow base Fine Accoutrements soap, or even a $9.00 tub of Cella. Now, should I have said that the $30.00 soap was "crap"? In the abstract that was a mistake, because it was "OK". However, if I am being honest I am somewhat offended when somebody offers a product for 3x the price of a product that has been on the market for over 100 years and it not only isn't 3x better, frankly it is not as good. It sort of offends me the way Gillette offends me. It seems disrespectful. So, that is what motivated me to say it was "crap". I probably should keep a strong statement like that to myself (I know better) but in the context of this thread, where people are allegedly worried about FOMO I thought that it might provide some perspective about the siren song of the latest and greatest.
I apologize to the extent I offended anyone and will take a short time out.
I like to hear Dave slurp his coffee while he shaves.
Teddy makes a good point on Fine, Cella, etc compared with some of the artisan offerings that aren't very good. But there are some great artisan products that I would have missed if not engaged in FOMO. So I am in the Peloton on the chase of the next best AFS, soap, etc. If I wasn't sniffing the pack I would have missed on a few of my favorites that I can't do without. In fact, I unabashedly get backups for those. I am still mad at myself for not hoarding more of the Fine and Haslinger pux. So be not ashamed of chasing the virgin pink unicorn who likes to cook - be ready to be disappointed, but sometimes, occasionally it is worth it!

I think people that feel the need to judge other people's level of self control have zero self control
