So I used the sandalwood creme today for my shave. Out of the jar, it was very dry smelling to me so I was a little bit apprehensive. I took an almond size worth and smeared it on my face and followed by face lathering with a 24mm badger. Lathered up easily and felt nice as far as texture and the shave went great. As far as my notes on the scent, I tried recalling from years ago what the Fine Santal shave soap smelled like. To my memory, I thought I remembered notes of sandalwood, a creamy facet and some of the dry scent I mentioned before, maybe I interpreted it as some added cedarwood.

Anyways, once the creme was lathered up, that overly dry smell mellowed out and was more pleasant. I think this is a nice blend and I even looked up the notes and reviews of Art of Shaving Sandalwood on Fragrantica. I remember seeing in forum posts some mentioning a smoke note. I would say the Ethos sample has a bit of everything mentioned above, a balance of sandalwood, cream and smoke. The "cream" and "smoke" are there but not over the top. I think the response will be pretty positive in regards to the smell. I don't think Frank could have done any better with both his creme formula and the scent on this sample.

I appreciate the chance to be apart on the passaround and the box was sent to bobmsp this afternoon which should arrive on Monday. I think some of you on this list below will be able to share more detailed reviews that were really looking for a AOS dupe and look forward to hearing what everyone else has to share about this scent. Take care and cheers everyone

Thank you for the detailed review and it tells me a lot. Some of which I expected from this first sample. I think the one thing that stands out is that it’s not as creamy as it should be. That can be corrected fairly easily by increasing the Mysore Sandalwood accord and adding a little more Benzion. An the AOS does have a somewhat powdery note so I may have to add one but I’ll wait till I make the other adjustments first I mentioned. The dry woody note comes more so from the East Indian Sandalwood as it’s not like real Mysore which is very creamy but because of the very expensive price of it using that in a reasonably priced product isn’t an option. Also your not the first person to give me feedback from the pass around but it’s in line with most of the others who pm’d me their feedback. I’m glad you posted yours up for everyone to see.

I think the consistency of the feedback I’ve gotten at this point is more than enough to get me started on the 2nd submission.  like I mentioned my target is more so the Vintage AOS rather than the Fine Absolutt which is obviously made up from all synthetic aroma ingredients and the Dupe of the AOS was probably done by a large fragrance house. Trying to dupe that scent would take a lot more time so in my mind why not try to match the original vintage AOS which Fine tried to dupe which is a nice scent certainly but when you put them side by side their definitely different and I prefer the  vintage AOS over the Fine and most of the people that have messaged me about this project feel pretty much the same way except for a couple that like the Fine but mentioned they never smelled the original AOS. Doing original or vintage scents is more difficult and the most successful and easiest way is to send them to a Fragrance House and let them do it but that’s a whole other thing and cost of a minimum order plays a huge part and I’m almost certain most artisan soap makers don’t go down that route.

My last thoughts are if I keep some of the other notes like the Fir, Myrrh etc at a lower level and bring up the more creamy notes we may end up with a scent that doesn’t have the somewhat medicinal opening of the original AOS but  more focus on the Sandalwood and this may begin to have some of the aroma vibes of the Fine but with a more natural twist to it.

Once again thank you for taking the time to review this sample and also doing some homework on the AOS scent. I hope you sign up for the 2nd round pass around as you’ve already had you nose on the first one.

Best Regards

Frank

UPDATE:

So the Blood Orange Labels arrived in todays mail and I’ll be getting the shave creme jared up and the skin food splash and sone EDT’s also made up stating Monday. After that I have to get them to my vendors as we will all release this in unison as it’s only fair.

Also I wanted to let you know I’m a little behind schedule on a few things but not terribly so.
It’s been a tough few weeks and I’ve collectively lost almost 2 weeks. First had sone minor surgery that I had sone slight complications from that kept me home for a couple of days and then like 3 days later I got Omicron and Bronchitis simultaneously. So that pretty much kept me out of work for 8 days.  An to top off this memorable last 30 days I got my very first attack of diverticulitis which landed me in the emergency room and after 6 different test and 12 hours in there I’m back home. Got antibiotics, and can only eat liquids for the first 3 days and the doctor said it would take about about a week or so to heal the inflammation and the infection I have. The pain is calming down a bit but still very present So sone rest for the weekend but I plan to be back to work on Monday and get back to the tasks at hand. Hopefully this is the end of the health surprises!

I wasn’t going to post these health issues up but since it’s effected my production speed I didn’t want anyone thinking why is this guy taking so long to get the new products out. He must not work much. Which most that know me know that’s not the case.

Oh and a shout out to sone of my Doctor customers/ Friends who have not only reached out to me but keep checking in to see how I’m doing. I know how busy you guys are so amazing you found time to do so and it’s very much appreciated my friend! Love and respect for all that you do each and every day!

Have a great weekend all and for those Football fans like me hope you enjoy the Super Bowl. Both my teams feel short in the playoffs but I’m hoping for a good game.

Sorry to hear about your recent health issues Frank. Just rest and listen to your docs as their dietary advise is key. Take all the time you need as our soap obsessions can wait. Enjoy the super bowl this year with popsicles and virgin Jell-O shots.
