Gentlemen, share (you can in a personal to avoid confrontation) your personal comparison with the Sebum and GD soap (if you also really like them and use them).
Thanks.

For me I will keep this quick and too the point why I prefer what I prefer. This is my opinion and not meant to start confrontation

Ethos: top tier ingredients and all products come at it from a skin care point of view and not just good smelling soaps

Sē’bŭm: best packaging but for me too hard to lather

GD: bases change all the time and I cannot keep up with it, also some of the scents are too complex for my nose

All brands have good products, but I prefer ethos

bgolfo summed it up perfectly. Not much more needs to be said.

this is stably high quality, suitable for people suffering from allergic reactions.
depending on what you want, if you need quality soap with good skin care, then you will not be mistaken in this choice.

All 3 are great and will always have a place in my den.

Of the 3 sebum is the trickiest to use, followed by ethos and GD being the easiest to use.

Sebum scents are the most natural smelling to me. I have the ethos lavender only and it is quite natural to my nose as well, but can’t speak to the brand as a whole. Grooming Dept is the most complex scent wise and often reminds me of niche perfumery more than a standard shaving soap company.

Imo you can’t go wrong with any of the 3.

Ethos: Great lather, great scents, but I got rid of mine because my skin reacts to something in the soap formula. Splash is VERY astringent. On the expensive side of the scale.

Sē’bŭm: Nice scent, but couldn't lather soap worth a damn. Got rid of the soaps quickly. Serum is the best though! THE most expensive of the 3!

Grooming Dept: My favorite artisan of all time! Lamb tallow & goats milk formula is my #1. GD Serum is 99% the quality of Sē’bŭm at half of the price. Many scents are single-release and never return however.

What kind of reaction did you get?

bgolfo summed it up beautifully. Like many others I have found Ethos to excel at skin hydration both during the shave and especially post shave. Other soap artisans may have more scent options but each Ethos release has provided exceptional scents, lathering ability and post shave experience making it my favorite among all other soaps currently available.

Mr_Smartepants I find it very odd that your skin reacted as described especially since so many people from all over the world with a variety of skins types have mostly commented in a positive way regarding the post shave hydration and moisturization of the Ethos skin food splash. Since you seem to have had such a reaction you may want to discuss this with your health care professional as the primary ingredients for Ethos and other splashes are all very similar.

Personally I am not likely to try any other brands. I am not surprised as it took me like 2 years before I settled on my favorite blades after trying multiple samples - I have recently figured out my best brushes and I am finally figuring out my RAD killers. It has taken time and many trials but unless a soap can "work" as well as Ethos it may not make it into my rotation of personal top tier products.

It can certainly happen.

I started using Cetaphil sensitive skin face wash. It’s recommended by many medical folks and has many fans. The stuff made my face a red, itchy, irritated mess.

It’s not always ingredients, but how they interact with one another and quantities used.

Kehole Absolutely you are correct.

I used a soap from a respected artisan (I won't give the name) and after using the soap and matching after shave for several weeks I developed a mild skin reaction which went away when I stopped using it. When I retried it I had the same reaction so I no longer use it but I understand this is possible.

I still think if someone has "a VERY xyz" reaction they may want to pursue a medical opinion as the best way of dealing with their unique skin concerns.
