Do you grill vegetables on the gas/charcoal grill

For those of you who are not in waterlogged parts of the country, summer is firmly here and it's time to take cooking outside.  Recently I've been playing with grilling vegetables on the gas grill along with meat/fish/chicken.

So far I've grilled:
  • Sliced sweet potatoes, lightly salted and peppered with a brush of olive oil (quick cooking and delicious).
  • Grilled slices of onion (Vidalia, White Onion, Bermuda) - again delicious.
  • Sliced Zucchini, again lightly brushed with olive oil and lightly salted and peppered.

I'm curious what other folks are doing with vegetables (or fruit) on the grill?

I haven't done many, OK none, but I'll get to that. They are excellent grilled.

I have grilled potatoes which really isn't a veg'. The problem is that I was eating 1/2 of what came off of the grill and that wasn't the goal. They were delicious. Think the best French fry you ever had and make it at least 2x better. They were awesome! But I don't think they'll work on a gasser. I have access to huge amounts of heat with my ceramic grill and lump charcoal and that's really what they require. Because few survived the grilling I haven't repeated it with potatoes or any other veggies. I just couldn't help myself and I don't trust myself. That may be a poor excuse but I swear that it's the truth.

while I don't use a grill at the moment, grilled corn is simply fantastic...I'm not sure that there's anything like it.

I'm not sure "gas" and grill belong in the same sentence, might be close to blasphemy Smileyou're right though grilled corn on the cob is amazing.  Try using Apple wood chips for your next cook out... You'll never use propane again.

You bring up the important issue of heat. As it's just my wife and I, we have a simple 2-burner gas grill, however I cheat the heat issue by using heavy cast iron grates which like heavy dutch ovens hold heat like no one's business. So I'm not starting at as high heat, I'm not loosing much due the simple mass of the cast iron grill.

I've about grilling corn many times, but haven't yet tried it. I need to do this, thanks for reminding me.

I agree with you about the superiority of charcoal over gas. Probably until retirement when time and living situation allow, at home it'll be gas for now. Years when I"m able to go camping (early July), I've loved cooking on charcoal. Our default camping area in Vermont has a ton of downed Maple due to hurricane Irene 3 years ago. This wood is seasoned and produces heat like no one's business. I had to learn how to dial back how much wood I was adding to the fire because it was too hot to approach.

Thanks for the tip on apple wood chips, I'll pick them up..

Bob, if you like gas and want to stay with it, there are extremely high temp' gas grills made. They are quite expensive though, or they were. I don't know their names.

I grill entire salads on my charcoal grill. Whole romaine heads, halved peppers, sliced onions and tomatoes, corn, zucchini sticks. Salads are actually my favorite thing to grill. They're especially good with bbq chicken.

Your gonna think I'm crazy but if you take semi thick slices of apple, pear or pinapple and grill them up they are delicious. And grilled pear or grilled apple go really good on a grilled chicken sandwich.
