Do you get irritated when.....

-especially after a delightfull brick building in Westwood Village home to a multi generation Tuscan restaurant became his named playhouse. Grow a beard and create a Grizzly Adams or white haired Santa in red suspenders personnae or shave.

I always thought the unshaven, stubbly look was slovenly rather than cool.  Not everyone is going to be Dapper Dan, but there is a lot to be said for basic hygiene and grooming.

I don't understand why "unshaven" equates to "slovenly" or a lack of hygiene...

It takes a lot of effort to maintain a beard no matter the size. The "stubble look" is one of the more high maintenance looks a man can achieve. It also happens to be extremely highly rated as attractive by women.

I guess I just don't understand why it is assumed that a man who doesn't shave his face is slovenly, unkempt, unhygienic, and rude.

In fact, the only thing that can be assumed about a man that goes out unshaven is that he did not shave that day. Every other assumption is unsupported assumption about a man you've never met and haven't taken the time to know.

Which one is more rude?

We all make assumptions everyday. How we choose to interact with people is far different than a personal opinion we may hold. I never thought opinions were rude, even if we disagree with them. They're just opinions.

Why is it rude to make a personal Grooming choice to maintain short stubble, but not assume a person with stubble is a slovenly, unkempt and rude individual?

I'm considered rude because you have to look at my beard?

That's not only rude, it's downright ignorant and entitled. My grooming choices do not impact anyone else...

Well, I wrote that considering me rude because of my facial hair is rude and ignorant.

You don't have to assume. I stated pretty clearly what my thoughts are about people who consider facial hair rude. If that shoe fits, put it on and wear it. If it doesn't fit, it wasn't directed to you. No need to assume anything.

What you have to do, is understand that having and stating opinions is all well and good, as long as you accept that there will be those that disagree and are equally vocal.

As a man that hasn't shaved my face in well over 20 years, I am not about to sit idly by and allow others to call me rude, slovenly, unhygienic and unkempt. It's rude.

It is one thing to not like bearded, semi-bearded or clean shaven face. But it is another thing to imagine a correlation between being bearded and unhygienic solely because of some anecdotal evidence.

Opinions are like ' the opening of the rectum on the body surface', everyone has one. Doesn't mean they are to be revered.

I work a few feet from a guy who always has varying lengths of stubble but never is clean-shaven. He is always getting me sick (including at the moment). Now, I could blame his two small children for bringing home germs from school, but as a clean-shaven guy, I think I'd just prefer to blame his stubble

It appears the older I get the longer my list of affronts and complaints gets. The lack of manners, common courtesy or even behaving stupidly at physical risk to others is up there personally along with saving the planet and religious zealots of all stripes. I realised today there is a new one.
I try to walk out the door with my zipper up, shoes shined and watch wound. I know all manner of archaic rules for men's dress and have my own look.
I want to have boys who attend formal events in a tuxedo tshirt gibbeted at a major crossroads as warning.

Funny, but it seems that as I age, I have fewer things to complain and get irritated about. I am actually veering in the opposite direction and becoming more serene.  

I really enjoyed this back and forth! On the one hand, I understand what Kav's saying and, I think, why. Western society has grown far less polite, shall I say, than it was when I was a boy. (And that, my friends, wasn't yesterday.) Moreover, what philosophers call, "Postmodernism" has permeated our culture--probably due to the ease, speed and scope of social media--to the point where one can spout off and have those comments instantaneously spread around the globe. On the other hand, like Celestino, I've mellowed over the years; so that while certain things--like political posts--get under my skin, fewer things really bother me any more.

I was simply commenting on whether or not "opinions", NOT actions, are rude or not. I sport quite a long Van Dyke myself. I truly believe you are misunderstanding my post.

Let me also add that there is a huge difference between ideas that are "held" and ideas that are "shared". I hope that you understand that I was referring to the former NOT the latter.

Did I miss something?? When did anyone imply that men with facial hair were rude?
