Do you get irritated when.....

I would like to see people show respect for establishments they enter. It used to be that nice restaurants had rules for attire. My guess is that things are so competitive these days that they don't do that. I dress appropriately out of respect.

It's also true that there are plenty of folks in this world who think only of themselves. I cut the young folks, mid twenties and younger some slack as they are still growing up. I was a long haired yippee and can assure you that many of the older folks saw me and had concern about the future.

I'll also say that if an old friend had a nice multi generation restaurant and some joker made it his hangout dressed like a bum that it would grate on my nerves.

Otherwise your signature would be 'Hate, Grudge and Gentlemanly Shaving', Mr. C.

Funny, but it seems that as I age, I have fewer things to complain and get irritated about. I am actually veering in the opposite direction and becoming more serene.  

That's from years of using really soft and beautiful brushes with which to shave.

When I was 6 years old my grandfather partnered with niegbhor Sabu Dastagir building homes in the San Fernando valley for servicemen who discovered California en route to the Pacific. They did their own financing with a Savings and Loan and never refused a vet and busted up some old CCR nieghborhoods with exclusions against jews, blacks etc. Over in Ventura county, walking distance from where I now type; JUNGLELAND was a rural providor of exotic livestock for the film industry. Mr Dastagir received a phone call one day begging
help with a elephant behaving aggressively. We drove out; Sabu, Pops and myself in a bathtub Packard with Uncle Jack's comedy show playing on the AM radio. I think it took him all of 3 seconds to discover an unseen injury to said elephant's trunk and remove a large wooden splinter and wash it out. Then I got to ride with him down the future Thousand Oaks BLVD as he explained the trunk was her most delicate and  used of senses. I later transfered this lesson to many a horse with torn up mouth from idiots using aggressive bits.

I think the last restaurant to occupy the Geffen space was called Strattons. Unfortunately you cannot under dress in LA. Recently my wife and I had dinner at Valentino (one of LA's tops) and had the misfortune to see people in T shirts. Nothing wrong with well groomed facial hair however I prefer to be clean shaven every day.

I'm with celestino ...the older I get, the less I am concerned with the actions of others that do not impact me.

There was a time in my life when little things bothered. I was easily angered by the actions of others that I perceived to be an affront to my personal sensibilities. As I've grown, I've come to realize that it is actually rare to encounter someone that is truly rude for the sake of rudeness alone, or is so arrogant and self-absorbed that rudeness just oozes from their personality. Certainly, those people exist, but as I have encountered more people that were only perceived as rude due to mitigating circumstances easily observed, I have learned to give the benefit of the doubt more often than not.

These days, my main goal in life is to raise my daughter to be respectful to everyone. I try very hard to instill in her 3 main concepts:

1-You cannot control what other people do, only how you respond to it

2-Everybody in this world is dealing with a problem you know nothing about, right now. Be kind.

3-Don't let anyone take advantage of you. Be kind, but be strong. You are not better than anyone else, but nobody is better than you either. You can be strong and assertive without being mean.

For me...I try to look past the way a person presents themselves physically, and focus on the way they present themselves in character. Respect given is respect earned, even if you look like you've spent the last 4 days sleeping in a ditch. There are some really decent people that find themselves in very difficult situations, and judging them for that, rather than the content of their character, is unfair, in my opinion. I've seen hard times, and I certainly wouldn't want anyone judging me for my struggles...

I CANNOT STOMACH fools who go out unshaven as some statement of individuality masking slob toilet matching their slobwear. David Geffen be damned
-especially after a delightfull brick building in Westwood Village home to a multi generation Tuscan restaurant became his named playhouse. Grow a beard and create a Grizzly Adams or white haired Santa in red suspenders personnae or shave.

I always thought the unshaven, stubbly look was slovenly rather than cool. Not everyone is going to be Dapper Dan, but there is a lot to be said for basic hygiene and grooming.

I don't understand why "unshaven" equates to "slovenly" or a lack of hygiene...

It takes a lot of effort to maintain a beard no matter the size. The "stubble look" is one of the more high maintenance looks a man can achieve. It also happens to be extremely highly rated as attractive by women.

I guess I just don't understand why it is assumed that a man who doesn't shave his face is slovenly, unkempt, unhygienic, and rude.

In fact, the only thing that can be assumed about a man that goes out unshaven is that he did not shave that day. Every other assumption is unsupported assumption about a man you've never met and haven't taken the time to know.

Which one is more rude?
