Decemboar Shave #3 -- Saturday Luxury Shave

Razor: Yates Precision 921 M for face, H for head
Blade: Rapira Lux
Brush: Omega 10077
Soap: Captain's Choice 45th Parallel

I purchased two 10077s in September. My hope was/is that upon break-in the 22 mm knot would become more dense and soft as the hairs split. With my original 49, I did the "soak for 3 straight days/brush vigorously on a towel for 10 minutes daily" routine and the bristles began to split nicely and the brush was noticeably softer after the 72 hour treatment. I got lazy with these two, and just used them regularly during October/November. The bristles are softer, but they have not begun to split. After this morning's shave both 10077s are in a mug beginning the 72 hour soak/scrub regimen.

The Yates remains my favored razor, so it was chosen for my first use of a Rapira blade. Results were excellent, and it's a good thing because I blindly purchased 100 based on price alone. Relieved that they are compatible with my skin.

The Captain makes a mighty fine cream. Very tasteful level of scent, excellent structure that stays well lathered in the bowl for quite a long time.

Hey Eric

The Platinum Lux are a fave of mine as well. Only difference, I purchase 100 AFTER trying a tuck  Tongue
and the Yates has tied my brass Karve CB as the favored DE razor.

I have never tried the 72 hour fridge method, but your experiences have me thinking I will. During the Black Friday craziness, AP Shave Co had some boar knots listed. Andrew wasn't overjoyed with them, so they aren't listed under the regular knot menu. I decided to pick up 2 given how inexpensive, and it gave me the excuse I needed to order a G5A knot, lol. I believe Andrew thought they shed a bit too much and didn't want to disappoint his patrons with what might be an inferior knot to what is out there. Not sure I got all that right, so take it with a grain of salt!

The Rapira were at a price I couldn't refuse. I am supporting other shavers in the house, so the purchase was relatively low risk  Smile.

For the soaking, I am not sure refrigeration is necessary. Legend has it that Americans have mis-interpreted the translation of the Italian barber in an old Mantic59 video, where I first learned of the soaking method. Where the barber explains the bristles should be soaked in cold water, apparently he simply meant as opposed to from the hot tap. This time I am soaking at room temperature. If there is no splitting, maybe I'll try refrigeration.

The 10077 is a very inexpensive brush. I am hoping the bristles are the same quality as the 49. There is also a very prominent glue bump in the center of each of them, rising about 1/2 inch above the handle into the knot. The glue bump does not affect my lathering, but it also accounts for the price of the brush. If the bristles break in as expected, I will feel like I got a great value and will be happy. If not, very small price to pay,  . . . AND a great excuse to UPGRADE! Win-win.

Here's a couple good options:

I had, of course, go and look at the Ali store. Thanks for that. Now I'm thinking. And I may need handles. Like I said, thanks.  Tongue

I'll give you one guess what I'll be doing this weekend and also what I'll be shaving with next week!

A nicer looking user grade AutoStrop B1 after a soak in hot water/dawn detergent and scrubbing with toothbrush/bristle brush! My non-expert opinion is this is nickel plated, not silver.

I think I'm going to need to tweak the tooth (proper term?) that holds the left-side blade stop/guide, right as you are looking at the second photo. It is lower than the one on the left side of the photo. When I push on the tab to raise the guard, if I don't push down on the blade...the blade only goes under the blade guide on the left of the picture. I have to slightly press on the blade for it to go under both blade guides. I'm concerned that this would cause to blade to not sit level.

Not only a great job shining up the razor, but on the nice layout of your photos (as seen from my laptop)! Great work all around.

The Semogue Galahad made its debut this morning. Another scrubby brush but no poking! However, it is a bit stiff yet, so I think it will need more work to get as soft as the SOC (I hope, because I love the handle color!)

And another fantastic shave with the Type G! My avatar currently shows Cary Grant as Mr. Blandings shaving with what many believe is a Schick Type G. Being a huge Cary Grant fan, I decided to get one after I acquired the Type I Hydro-magic that I wrote about yesterday. Here is a short (2-3 minute) clip of the shave scene above.
