Very nice writeup ewk I enjoyed reading your thoughts and am interested in your future posts. Have fun using the "+" plate, I like that one more than the original 0.68 base plate. My skin likes the reduced blade feel and increased gap, seems to give my best shaves. Using a Nacet blade, I think you have a good pairing so enjoy the next shaves. Cheers

An Evening With the Cx 316L + Plate

Thanks for the info about + gap/exposure zaclikestoshave. Tonight I took the + plate to the face and dome.

I achieved BBS on both areas with 2 passes plus light pickups in the usual places, an excellent result. I did not notice much difference in efficiency or blade feel between the original and + plates. The increased gap is much more to my liking, especially on a head shave as it increases the effective shaving angle. For example, I get my best results with a Gillette Tech with a shim or two to increase the gap; it really wakes up the Tech.

My shaving preference is milder on the face, more gap/exposure on the head. I am looking forward to applying the ++ to the dome on Thursday.

I also prefer a lighter razor for the head, and the Carbon Cx webbed plate is a perfect weight for me, even with the stainless steel handle. Although my preference is for a shorter handle, this one is well balanced and required no adjustment or learning on my part.

Comparing the Original and + Baseplates

Tonight I alternated the two baseplates, using each plate on each side of my face for a two pass shave. In short, I find the two plates provide equal efficiency. My personal preference is towards the higher exposure of the original if I had to pick, but the end result of both is a comfortable and smooth BBS.

ewk when you were shaving, where did you find your cutting angle? Closer to the cap or base plate?

I believe the cutting angle is best at 30 degrees, slightly biased towards the base plate.

andrewjs18 -- As the passaround razors are currently in the Lowcountry of SC and I will be moving them along early next week, can Eleven be bumped up and we do a get together before sending via USPS? If that is too great a breach of protocol, not problem. Just thought I would ask.

Thanks ewk for your thoughts...much appreciated! Totally relate to your shimming the vintage tech! Prior to the Cx I would shim an ASD2 or the tech...

A couple of notes I thought I would include...

1) I included blades that come up as favorable with my customers...the Gillette Blue and Nacet are similar in my experience, they really mellow out the shave. These blades came up a lot when we just offered the Original plate as they mellowed out the exposure. The Kai blade seems much stiffer and I think is a slightly wider blade which adds some exposure/efficiency(fairly unique blade). The Astra was what we used during prototyping...keep me posted if you have a blade you like or would recommend! Don't let me influence your favorite blade but thought I would share...

2) In this pass around we included a black felt pocket for this pass around(Prototype only)...it was an idea from a prior pass around on this forum, someone had suggested including a polishing material(Big thank you!). We have some custom packaging for our exotic pieces which includes felt(See photo), we also include the leather pouch with some of these exotics. We are considering using felt in our pieces but not sure...it is expensive. This pouch is made from natural wool made by https://www.faribaultmill.com/ ...cool story with this company. We still don't use plastic in our packaging (except when we have to e.g. plastic pouch for international shipping)...

Thanks again for the opportunity to get your thoughts with the pass around...we really appreciate your comments and feedback!
