It would seem that you left out the most important part about the "machined finished" razors being they were requested by the people that received them!! He didn't just randomly send them out to people...

He put "machine finished" in quotes for a reason.

My point was that the people that ordered said "machined finish" razors knew that the razors were "not" actual finished razors prior to ordering them from him!! I replied to the post above because the person either didn't know that or specifically left that info out as to make it look like Phil doesn't care what condition his product looks like that he's shipping!!

I don't think anyone suggested that Phil doesn't care about the condition of his products, but there's enough evidence to demonstrate that he hasn't been sufficiently diligent on QC.

As far as people knowing that the initial run of the Asylum McMurphy was for unfinished versions, I haven't seen that anywhere. If you have information to the contrary, good if you can share and clear this up. From what I have seen, those who purchased the "machine finished" razors were surprised and disappointed at the lack of finish, and there have been pictures shared where the machining appeared uneven.

I knew that the razors were sold as machined finished and were not sent to the polisher. Anyone who read all the posts should have known that as well. Other razor manufactures sell machine finished along with other finishes, but the pictures of Phil's machine finish along with the comments about their roughness making shaving difficult really looked bad.

My surprise had to do with sending out something that looked that bad especially after sending out defective razors once before. It's not like thousands of razors were being processed and sent out. If I remember correctly there were less than a hundred each time.

I would agree with you that the people knew the machine finish was not a polished finished. I would also say that one manufacture’s machine finish could be far different than another. No real sure way to know unless the manufacture shows an example of their razor just off the machine but prior to polishing.

On The Shave Nook forum Phil has a picture of his Asylum 17-4 in the machine finish. You can find this by going to the DE razor section, flipping back three pages to “The Asylum 17-4 Razor-Coming Soon” dated 3/15/21 and then go to post#182. If I saw that and then received the example we are talking about here, I would be very upset.

A customer (another forum) just received the polished version of the Asylum 17-4 and discovered the top cap was uneven. He has to return the cap at his own expensive to Bullgoose Shaving and they will then send him a replacement. No refunds will be accepted.

After a while as threads like these head south, they all appear the same.

I don’t think it matters at all whether the customers requested the razor to be sent to them in this condition, or even whether they knew exactly what the “machine finished” razor would be like. Bullgoose shipped a sub-standard product - again - and that’s the only fact that matters. Whatever the circumstances, these products are now out there, being shown on fora like this, and unfortunately Phil’s business will now be judged by many based on the quality of these products that Phil allowed to be shipped. No good businessman would send out products in this condition - he should simply have politely declined the customer’s wishes because his reputation and that of his products is important to protect.

I have no experience of buying from Bullgoose or using his products, and definitely no axe to grind. As a bystander, merely observing this string of debacles, I can only say I would not trust Phil’s products or consider buying one because of his manifest lack of care and attention. Maybe that is unfair but Phil has been in business long enough that he should know how important reputations are and how easily they can be undermined.

Frankly, the Bullgoose Asylum razor project seems to be jinxed. The only good it is doing is to provide us with forum fodder. He should probably just move on to something else and try to learn from his (repeated) mistakes.
