been thinking of checking one of these razors out, mostly because it's simply beautiful and I'd like to venture out some.

talking with Shane, I know it's nowhere near as aggressive as an ikon tech or muhle r41, but he said it's very efficient. for those of you who have used one of these and the other 2 razors I mentioned, how would you stack them up?

I’m also curious about the Blackbird but I think I’ll pick up the new release coming soon, the Dart. Shane has said that it’s not quite as aggressive but for $99 it’s worth a flyer.

Andrew, the razor is still quite 'aggressive'. Not in the region of the other two you mention, but you'll find it has substantial blade feel, so you'll have to acclimate yourself to that. Other than that, it is very effective once you get used to it.
I would suggest going with the Polished version as, personally, I find it to be smoother than the other two offerings.
Good luck.

When I first shaved with my Blackbird, I realized that my skin felt the same as it had after my shaves with the Mühle R41 (2013). In other words, the thing shaves closer than anything else out there, except for perhaps the Mühle.

After getting the technique down with the Blackbird, I find it significantly smoother than the iKon 104 Tech and the Mühle R41, but just as efficient. My birds (machined safety bar, black oxide open comb) are my favorite razors, and I’m looking forward to finding out more about the upcoming Dart, and the Artist Club razor that is to follow.

Really interesting new DE from Blackland, only $99 too nicely done. Look forward for more information on it and how smooth it shaves.

Good luck.

Blade feel is definitely there and it serves to highlight poor technique.

Muhle r41 is crazy badass and the blackbirds is not nearly as bad; but the feel is similar. If r41 is a 10 aggression, I'd say the closed comb BB would be a 7.5 and the OC 8 now that I've gotten used to it. Add 1 point while you're still learning the angles.

Also the polished version is definitely worth it if budget allows. I wouldn't say it's a must have feature, but the polished version is a bit more forgiving with sloppier technique.

I forgot to mention that I ended up picking one of these up off of nachum and finally shaved with it last night. first, it's a beautiful razor. I bought the machined finish version of the razor - I love the raw look of razors, personally.

I paired the razor with a new astra sp blade as I wanted to stick with a more well-rounded blade. the shave was pretty damn good, I didn't feel any harshness whatsoever.

The Blackbird is one of my favorites. Matsilainen 's testimony sold me on the BB. I peppered him with questions for a few weeks. I believe it was the first modern I bought. It's blade forward design shaved me closer than anything before it. It is very smooth, to me. Not harsh/aggressive at all. I found proper angle to be very intuitive. Within the first 3" I knew it was different and I liked it, a lot. Astras work very well with it. Sharper blades require more concentration but pay in spades.

That razor kicked off my love of modern razors and I went through quite a few looking for something with that much blade feel. I've got a couple that a right there with it in shave quality. The Blackbird is probably the best value in higher end razors, IMO. I like it that much.

Welcome to the club, boss. It will be interesting to follow your thoughts on it as you get to know it.

Glad to hear that, Andrew!
