I recently picked up a Bay Rum soap and aftershave from PAA. This was my first experience with a Bay Rum of any brand. The scent to me smells great however, when I finished my shave and applied the aftershave I immediately got a burning sensation. This wasn't the typical aftershave sting just multiplied it seemed to be a different kind of burn, like my face felt hot for a good 4-5 minutes after that it stopped and all was well. Is this normal for Bay Rums? I watched a video of Nick Shaves using this same aftershave and he seemed to have a similar reaction but not sure if it was just a magnified aftershave burn for him or more what I experienced. Any feedback would be appreciated!

It sounds as though you might have had a reaction to something in it. If it was a reaction and depending on what you reacted to in the bay rum, yes, it could happen again. Or, it might only be something in that particular bay rum that is the problem and another wouldn't have that effect.

FWIW, you aren't the only person to react badly to certain substances in shave products. This won't make you feel any better, but it's not uncommon.

Thanks ShadowsDad, I feared that's what it was. It smells so dang good but yeah definitely didn't feel right. I'll give it another few shots I suppose, see if it happens each time.

Most likely, reaction to fragrance. Have you tried same soap base with a different scent? All Bay Rum scents and components to build the scent are different, so I wouldn't write off all Bay Rums, try different makers. My personal favorite Bay Rum soaps are B&M, LASS, and of course Krampert's Smile

I havent tried any other Bay Rums but the soap itself was fine, just the aftershave was the problem, I also have another Phoenix aftershave and have had zero issues with it. So just found it odd that I was having that reaction.

Just tried it again, didnt shave today but thought I'd test it out and just wear it as a cologne. Not as intense but definitely still there. The best way I can describe it would be like back in the day when you'd lick a Big Red gum wrapper and stick it on your forehead to see how long you could leave it on for. Except its just all over my face where I apply the aftershave. Hopefully I'm not the only one who used to do that... lol

I have the same issue with RazoRock P.160 aftershave.  No issues with the soap at all.  The AS lights my face on fire for about 1.5-2 minutes and then its gone leaving only the scent which I love.  It's a different burn than the normal alcohol burn, this is more of a my face is very close to the surface of the sun burn.  Many folks have had issues with this product and I know this, I use it because I love the scent and can live through the burn.

Bay Rums tend to have spicier and diverse scent bases which cause many folks to have reactions.  I'd have to say bay rum is one of the scents I see most on BST where folks had a reaction to it.  As ShadowsDad posted the recipe for one Bay Rum may be vastly different from another so you may just have to try some different Bay Rums till you find one that doesn't cause an allergic reaction.  Good luck in your search!

What you describe here sounds a lot like a cinnamon burn, you are definitely not alone, very common reaction.
