But still, Dominica reigns supreme. Grand Bay quite good.

Favourite derivative is Derby City: it amazing

I've used some dominica bath soaps but never their splash. I have a bottle of the grand bay...while pretty good, I think it could be amped up some. my biggest complaint with grand bay is that they don't use an orifice reducer in an 8oz bottle!

Derby City - I dig their bottles, though I never did grab a bottle of their stuff. It looks like their etsy shop is closed up for now. if memory serves me correctly, doesn't their bay rum have vanilla in it? to me, vanilla doesn't belong in bay rum..

Actually some do have a reducer, some don't.

But it only good for about 2 hours on me. Dominica about 3. Atomic Age all day. But speaks to tonnes of spice vs traditional bay rum

Bourbon is the key ingredient to Derby. It the Rhett Butler of BayRum

Let me know if wanting a sample

Dominica doesn't use a flow restrictor either.  A bit of an issue for sure.  I have some Dominica Bay Rum with Lime that I also like.

For me and I think for many of us who love bay rum the biggest issue is how quickly that great scent fades.  I have solved that to some extent with some EDT/Ps from PAA and from Stirling.  They definitely last longer than splashes.

Bourbon would improve anything

I wonder if they started adding a reducer in their newer shipments. I reached out to the importer at the time and he mentioned that they weren't using reducers but if I found 1 that worked good, they'd start including 1...

sure, I'll gladly try the derby bay rum if you want to shoot over a sample. I can send a few $ to cover shipping if you want. thanks!

I think they use oddball bottles - the reducer from the 8 oz Ogallala sort of fits but not perfect - you can't get the cap on completely with it installed.

iirc, the importer told me they use an 8oz Boston round bottle.

I also have it in the bath and shampoo bar formats.

Back on track, clove - I think Ogallala bay rum is one that contains clove but I don't care because I love it. Again for me, if its a good scent and it happens to contain clove and its balanced and works for my nose then I'm good with it.  There are plenty of bay rums out there that don't have clove that I don't like.  Usually because they are all derived from he same ubiquitous bay rum scent blend available at the scent supply warehouse or wherever and the artisan doesn't really have enough (or any) experience with shaving scents, particularly bay rum and figures that that must be the stuff and goes with it.  Its sad really and does a disservice to the shaving community by putting another mediocre product on the market.  Do your homework - its not hard.  If you can't afford to buy a cross section of samples of the many many bay rums on the market I don't know why youre even in business.  How can you have any idea how your product will be received? Do you have a business plan?  Vision?  Brand identity?  Anything at all??  Even if your approach to bay rum is that youve smelled a bunch of them and this style is the one that you love personally thats better than the I have no idea what bay rum is supposed to smell like but this fragrance blend from Essential Wholesale & Labs ticks the bay rum box now on to barbershop...I'll be rich shortly.  Not.

Down that rabbit hole again  Big Grin  I guess what I mean to say is that clove is not a deal breaker for me.  I don't mind it if its part of a balanced bay rum scent that appeals to me.

Island Estate was created WITHOUT smelling ANY other bay rums. Unless you count one that I smelled 3 years previous to even trying. It was all done with texts I read of what a good bay rum should be.
andrewjs18 the presence of vanilla in a bay rum depends on how it's done.
