I'm not sure this post will tell you anything you don't already know, but FWIW, I got great results when I started treating "preshave" as a 24/7 undertaking.  In my case, the impetus was when the dermatologist pointed out that the problem shaving areas I showed him were all sun damaged.  So I implemented a widely advised strategy of twice daily cleansing, moisturizing, and applying sunscreen as needed.  In this way of looking at things, the preshave proper, while important, is the tail wagging the dog:  Products applied immediately prior to shaving are unlikely to remediate damaged or otherwise unhealthy skin.  In any case, IME there is no preshave proper magic bullet - nothing that makes nearly as much difference as implementing a 24/7 regimen.

Having said all that, my sun damage issue is easily treated.  OTOH both of you have indicated skin issues that may not be so easily treated, and I imagine both of you are already taking pretty good 24/7 care of your skin.  Nevertheless, it may help you to know that at least one of your fellow travellers does preshave proper, but does not stress over whether it's a shower, washing and rinsing with a moisturizing soap, or in a pinch, just liberally splashing comfortably hot/warm water.

Thanks for the thorough response! I do as you state, but I needed to read it as I tend to get caught up in stuff. I am sure others can benefit from this post!

Unfortunately, I will sheepishly respond that I do not.

I've been lectured by my dermatologist, because I have pale freckled skin, about sunblock. It's just too much to think about every day to apply sunscreen.

I also don't use a special facial soap. Again, I probably should. In fact, had I not taken to traditional shaving, I'd have a completely no frills regimen.

I probably should do something about that.

Eric:  Thanks for the kind words.  I, too, posted with other folks in mind in addition to yourself and Paul

Paul:  I use this Neutrogena combined Moisturizer/SPF 60 every morning.  We adopted a Golden Retriever last June, and dogs like that need their morning walk as early as possible in the hot weather.  The combined product works great and is very convenient in the early morning, when my eyes are open, but my brain is still playing catch-up.  It's also ultra sheer, as advertised.  The 1.7 oz bottle is not cheap, but it lasts about a month, including a few extra middle of the day applications.  The only fine print is that the SPF component is only good for 80 minutes, and, like the other sun blocks I have seen, it is ideally applied 15 minutes before going out.

Paul, I'll get more info on my routine soon. For now, I'll say it all is part of my morning, like time on the throne and like brushing my teeth (NOT during the throne time  Big Grin)

Cool, thanks Eric. I'll be curious to see what you use. Especially as a pharmacist and a man of science.

I may try out that facial lotion Mike posted (thanks HighSpeed ). CeraVe is a highly regarded brand.

I really do need to do more for my skin, especially since I'm living in the North-side of my 40s now. Which brings up the question... How did I make it this far? Surely I made enough stupid mistakes to be dead by now. I guess God is generous (or sadistic... depending on what's coming next, lol).
