Another new GEM razor from Rocnel

I think lots of folks are concerned about disease with used razors. Or maybe they just think it's gross.

Nothing 10 minutes in a Barbacide bath won't cure...

Actually soaking razors in hot water with any liquid soap and clean it with tooth brush will leave the razor clean and then you pour over it some 99% alcohol and whatever was on it is dead.

I admit I am a GEM and a single edge fanatic.  I have 11 different GEMs and each shaves as good as the others.
I paid less for all of them together  than that new boy on the block, Rocnel,  costs.
Granted they are only brass and chrome but they still do the job without fuss.
That poor, misunderstood, maligned, GEM Micromatic Open Comb stands proudly on par with its brothers like any true GEM.

I have two new razors that I will report on when I get a chance. Both are, in this amateur's opinion, extraordinary.
Since I have been absent they may no longer be news but I am sure to hear about that.

Shoot I paid half for the price of the razor for 8 different gems + 400 PTFE blades, but I understand that some people have to have the newest kid on the block even if it cost $400+

I have a 1912 that had most of the bronze coating worn off the handle. What to do?
One morning I was picking up the breakfast dishes when I noticed the remnants of my ersatz Turkish coffee in my cup.
"Why not?" I thought. I got the handle and dropped it into the cup. I checked it frequently expecting nothing good.
Two days later it had acquired a perfect match to the head's tan.
Four years later it still retains its dusky tint.
Undoubtedly indicative of its strong desire to please me.

Mickey speaking of Turkish coffee that's the only coffee I use to drink back home, now its only when I visit friends that I drink that coffee again... I should probably go to some of the euro stores here and buy me myself Turkish coffee and brass/copper coffee pot for cooking it

I don’t follow Rocnel closely, so I’m not sure if this is the same razor, but they recently posted a video on Instagram showing how it will also take the Feather FHS blade. The thing that’s cool/risky about it (depending on how you view the matter) is that the user needs to adjust the blade exposure.

That's been the thing I've been trying to figure out as well. I just can't tell if there are any blade stops on those two outer most teeth. If not, that thing could be menacing and dangerous if the blade were to loosen and slide forward.

OTOH on a slide loader you risk damage to the blade from rubbing the stops, a not uncommon problem with Schick injectors. The Schick repeaters have no stops.

In the video, the demonstrator pushes the blade into the razor head through the front opening, starting from one corner. So there are clearly no blade stops. Then a screw underneath the blade is tightened to hold the blade. Finally, the handle screws onto the screw that tightens the blade inside the razor head. Quite an interesting concept. Seems to work quite well — at least in the video.

Matt, that sounds ridiculously complicated. I don't do Instagram, Twitter, etc. so haven't seen the video but from what you have described, compared to some of my vintage SEs, I'd be spending more time loading and unloading a blade and less time shaving.

Not to mention the fact that the back edge (corners) of the blade are totally exposed, increasing the chances of unwanted cuts, especially to your ears. This looks like it might only be a real issue if you're trying to use the FHS10 blades, but still. And no, it doesn't look like there are any blade stops on the front edge of the baseplate either.
