Amazon Kindle Paperwhite

Another question, if I may.  This is a photo of the home page on my new Kindle.  Of the six books shown on the page, I should like to remove three of them, the two Samsung Galaxy S5 manuals (I purchased a new phone last month) and the book, Crossing Oceans, in the lower right (dreadful and I shall never finish it).  I got all of them from various Kindle apps on my iPads, iMac, and the S5 itself, when it was new.  When I click Delete from Device maybe the books themselves are off the device but the cover pictures remain, cluttering up my home screen.  Is there any way to remove them?  If that is impossible, is there a way to put them at the end of the queue so they will fall onto another page?  Thanks for any help you may give.

Last night, while reading in bed with my bedside lamp on, I found the light in the Kindle way too bright.  However, when I turned off the Kindle light, the screen was too dark.  As I slowly brightened the Kindle light I found a sweet spot that was perfect for reading the Kindle with my bedside light on.  It was a very natural look, as if there was no lighting coming from the Kindle but it could be very comfortably read from lamplight.  Oh, yes, no problems at all with a good night's sleep with this setting.

Freddy it is because you are showing 'all' books, not just downloaded ones. If you switch to viewing Downloaded, you won't see them.

Sourav, I just knew you were a genius.  Thanks; it worked like a charm (for now).  For example, what happens when I finish The Handmaid's Tale, which I downloaded from Amazon, and no longer want it on my home page?  Also, is there a way to freeze the order that the books are displayed.  Sometimes I look at the Kindle manual but don't want it listed first.  Yet as soon as I look and then close it, it pops to the front of the line.  It is only a reference tool that I shall look at occasionally, as opposed to a novel that I shall read daily until done.  I would rather have the novel always listed first until I finish reading it and then be able to remove it from the homepage.  Once again, thanks so much for the tip.

1. When you finish the book, simply remove it from the device (and keep showing downloaded only). It won't be on your homepage anymore.
   
   
2. You can create a collection (e.g. "My current books") and then sort by collection. In your picture, near top right corner it says 'Recent', change that to collection after you create one. But in this way, you will see that 'collection' like a folder, not books from that collection. I am not sure I know a way to do what you are looking for.

Once again, Sourav, a million thanks.  I shall try your suggestions as soon as I am done with dinner.  

I must say that even though I have had the Kindle for only a day, I am surprised at how fast I am taking to it.  After reading many of the reviews, both on Amazon and elsewhere, it seems one of the wishes a lot of folks wanted on the next iteration of the Paperwhite was physical turn page buttons and that is something I thought I would like, as well.  However the tap or swipe to go forward or back was almost immediately intuitive and I feel no need for them.  Another wish for the next Paperwhite seems to be a larger screen (7 or 8 inches) and smaller bevels.  However, I like the six inch screen and find the bevels make the e-reader easy to hold without interfering with the screen.

As yohannrjm stated about total pages listed at the bottom not necessarily being possible, your suggesting that there may not be a way to put books on my home page in a certain order and keep them in that order no matter which book I open allows me to move on from these minor things.  These are personal quirks of mine that I am sure I will not even think about after a bit.

As to physical buttons: it's the main reason I like using my Nook over the Kindle. I also like the contoured back of the Nook. It's more comfortable to hold and easier to navigate using the buttons. In almost every other aspect, the Kindle is as good or better. Oh, and the Nook has expandable storage, which is important for me as I have so many books.

Thanks, Yohann; now I know (and I'm glad to know that I'm not the only one frustrated by this ).

As for Nook vs. Kobo vs. Kindle, the Kindle was really a no brainer for me.  I got it mostly for light fiction reading, books that I probably would never read again, I believe Amazon has a huge selection, I got $30.00 off the price of the device, and I'm already a Prime member.  I have the Kindle  in a foldable case, the type that shuts the Kindle off when it is closed and reopens it when the case is open.  This makes it feel more book like to me and I don't find myself folding the top cover behind itself so I find it quite comfortable to hold.

For now, expandable storage isn't important to me.  As I say, most of my reading is for light enjoyment and when I am done with a novel like The Handmaid's Tale, if it was a physical book, it would get donated to my local branch of the San Diego Public Library.  If I know I want to keep a book, fiction or non-fiction, then I buy the physical book.  I shall remove The Handmaid's Tale from the Kindle when I am done with it and I assume that a) it will free up storage on the Kindle itself and b) the book will go into the "cloud" or wherever Amazon stores one's selection of books not on the device itself.

I think if I could have one thing added it would be some form of e-ink color.  I miss seeing the colors of a cover the way one can on the actual book, a tablet, or a smartphone.  I have read articles that it is being worked on so we'll see what comes around in the next couple of years. For now, though, I am not disappointed in my purchase.

My understanding is that the Voyage has stopped being produced by Amazon and is now only available used or, perhaps, refurbished.  Again, as I was reading about the Paperwhite, all sorts of wish wish lists and rumors were floating around for the next iteration, including buttons, more and better lighting, a larger screen, etc.  The current Kindle Paperwhite technology is now about three years old, which is ancient in technology terms.

yohannrjm and @iamsms, I finished The Handmaid's Tale, which had page numbers, and have started another book that doesn't.  I really miss page numbers, I must admit.  My understanding is that it is up to the publisher of the book, not Amazon, as to whether or not they'll go to the trouble of adding them.  Again, a minor thing, but I notice the omission.

On another note, I found that one can keep the time on the page if one wants so I added it to see whether or not it would be distracting.  Right now the answer is, not at all.  In fact, I forget it's there but I have found it convenient to have it there a couple of times.  I also must admit that I like how easy it is to tap on a word and bring up the dictionary.  Sometimes, I look up a definition even if I'm pretty sure I know the meaning of a word, just to verify that I'm correct.

As much as I am enjoying the Paperwhite, it is still true for me that when I was reading my other, physical, book in bed last night, there is still nothing like it and on some level, the Kindle simply cannot compete, at least for me.
