Amazon Kindle Paperwhite

Gents, I am eating a huge piece of humble pie because today an Amazon Kindle Paperwhite is due to be delivered to me.  I am a feel and smell the pages of a physical book person and never really wanted an e-reader.  However, as an Amazon Prime member, I was offered a free e-book and I decided to download it on my tablets, phone, and computer.  The book is The Handmaid's Tale and I am completely engrossed in it.  I read it on the tablet in my coffeehouse and on my phone in the bus.  What has amazed me is that I get so engrossed in the story that I don't realize I am holding an electronic device instead of a book.  I decided that this might be something that would work for travel as I shall be going to Scotland on Monday to visit a friend.  It just so happened that Amazon was offering $30.00 off the full price so I took the plunge.

I was just wondering if any of you have this device and if you have any tips and/or tricks about the device you can suggest.  They would be most appreciated.

By the way, The Handmaid's Tale, while a dystopian novel, I am finding quite pertinent in today's world climate.  Has anyone else read it?  I still have about 80 pages to read and, as I stated, am completely engrossed in the story.

Growing up, my dream was to have a massive house so that I can have a huge library. After finding out Kindle, I am quite happy with my 1 bedroom apartment.

I too was a paper holdout until I actually had kindle in hand.

Best investment, a fully adjustable book. Font size, type and the number of books you can carry (on a trip without putting you over the limit) is invaluable. The best part of the Kindle over the tablet, no distractions (email, Twitter whatever) and easily readable in the sun.

I have read that quite a bit and that is most definitely a plus.  I must admit that I still have a physical book (different title) on my night table for reading before I go to sleep.  I am not sure I would like the constant flickering at page turns on the Kindle just before trying to sleep nor the backlighting, as opposed to the warm light of my bedroom lamp.

You will find that the backlight of a kindle is much much better to look at than regular tablets/phones. I just wish they found a way to emit new book smell from Kindle - now that would be heaven.

It is interesting you mention flickering.

The effect is more like “refreshing text” rather than an actual flicker. The screen is constantly backlit, with a letter scroll. Hard to explain but the screen never goes black and changes to white, the text just “shifts.”

Kindle is great! I had a paper white but the power button stopped working so I can no longer turn it on, I was meaning to buy a new one but I started buying books again and kinda liking the physical book again.

I've had a Kindle of various sorts for years. I also use the Nook (Barnes & Noble reader). I currently have the Kindle Paperwhite and a Nook Glowlight.

I love them both. The ability to have hundreds of books on a reader is just amazing and I find them to be comfortable to use and easy on the eyes. I still love physical books, but I now only buy physical versions of books that are important to me and that I'd want to read again and again over the years.

My family and I just moved from a house we were renting to a townhouse (which is a lot smaller). Since I cannot have all my bookshelves up in the smaller apartment, I had to put many boxes of books in storage. While I miss a few of them, I don't find it to be a big deal that my books are not around me, because the Kindle and Nook allow me to read so many books between them.

I also like being able to read both these readers without having to have a lamp on. It keeps me from disturbing my wife.

Note: Research has shown that exposure to blue-tint lighting (which is what you get on both the Kindle Paperwhite and the Nook -- and any backlit electronic device) will interfere with your sleep patterns. Since I became aware of this, I try to use my reading lamp whenever possible, but sometimes I still use the built-in lighting system each of these readers has.
