I think I've read there were 2 versions made, 2011 & 2013. which is the preferred version?
if anyone wants to lend me their R41 for a few weeks, I wouldn't say no!
Andrew, I would go with the current model, the 2013. I had a 2011 a while back, and there was a lot of blade movement. I actually think it was a design flaw that they've corrected in the 2013 iteration. The 2013 is a very efficient/aggressive razor, but fairly smooth in spite of that. Smart to just get the head, as many shavers prefer a heavier handle on it than the stock Mühle handle that comes with it.
All the best,

2013. The 2011 is really hard to come by, and you'll pay for it. If you really want something close, then the Shavecraft Tech feels very similar to a 2011. I say start with the 2013 though. I find it much more smooth than the 2011 or the Shavecraft Tech.

It makes sense that a more aggressive razor, requiring fewer passes and a lighter touch, would actually be more gentle on the skin...
The most comfortable shaves I can get come from straights. I cannot get a shave that is as buttery smooth and comfortable as a straight shave, even with a brand new, palm stropped Astra or GSB. They simply cannot compete with the gentle, smooth feeling of a straight razor blade and it doesn;t get much more "aggressive" than a straight in terms of blade exposure and potential efficiency...
I think part of that smoothness comes from the stiffness of the blade, but even using a shavette with a 1/2 DE blade is much smoother than the same DE in a safety razor.
Is it all in my head? Certainly could be, but I am not the only person with these experiences, which makes it harder to believe that I'm just crazy...

I have similar experience to most people too! Mild razors cause irritation. I get better shaves with my straight razors or a 2013 Muhle 41. I avoid irritation by doing less buffing. I just ordered a Schöne razor which from what I heard is made FaTip.
used my gem 1912 tonight with a new GEM PTFE blade. I haven't used the 1912 in well over a year, I'll bet. the shave went pretty well, but I did nick myself 2X trying to get used to how short the handle is compared to my DEs.. hopefully I can find a handle that'll work in my box of razors.
Tu ne cede malis, sed contra audentior ito.
Probably it's my clumsy, unsteady fingers, but I find there's a sweet spot in the middle (currently occupied by Edwin Jagger) & deviating in either direction leads to irritation. I've tried a Maggard open comb & Ikon 102 (in increasing order of both efficiency and irritation) and a PAA nickel-plate DOC and Dorco PL-602 (increasingly inefficient and irritating).
If you have sensitive skin, yet want a razor that will truly get the job done... Check out the Timeless Razor with a .68 gap, smooth solid bar base/cap.
I recently picked up a whole bunch of Timeless Razor parts (two base plates, two caps, a handle and a stand) and used that combo above this morning. Supremely mild, yet didn't leave any stray stubble like mild razors typically do for me - and without extra strokes.
This razor continues to impress me, daily.
