out of interest, how blade clamping works in the Sailor.

To me it looked like the blade is clamped down tight when the knob is turned fully clockwise. (setting 0)
But even when you turn anticlockwise to go up from 1-5, the blade still holds firm....this seemed counter intuitive to me...
just wondering if anyone knows more about this mechanism and how it works.
There is a sprung plate between the base plate and the top cap which supports the blade from below. You have to increase the razor setting to 15 (2 1/2 full turns) before the blade rises above this plate and is not supported any more.
Tester28 question piqued my curiosity so I took some pics before my shave today.  Closed at the dot to one full rotation back to the dot.  Moriarty is correct the sprung plate rises keeping a grip on the blade. I noticed that the spring plate is affected by the curved blade acting as a counter spring. The gap between spring plate and cap opens a bit during the upward adjustment from the lowest setting. The blade is not just moving away from the base but it is unflexing too, changing the angle as well as the gap.  Interesting, probably unplanned but worked out great for the shave quality. Without a blade the spring plate stays in place throughout the range of adjustment.

Now I am curious if the later models have the same characteristic. Sounds like a question for the man with the most Sailors: LOOT
Edit: Looking at these pics today reminds me why I love this razor. It's iconic design is unlike anything else I own.

I always assumed the adjustment plate traveled at the same rate as the cap, because the springs force it to, to a point. I took a look at my 19, 20, and 21 model and without a blade, that seems to hold true until the adjustment plate reached maximum travel. Also, my adjustment plates start moving immediately.

With a blade, immediately from 0, the adjustment plate moves away from the base plate and the top cap does seem to move slightly away from the adjustment plate. It is only for the first thread or so. Maybe this is the blade spring, I dunno. After the first thread tho, the adj plate and top cap seem to rise together, until the adj plate reaches maximum rise.

Just saw this video update on the Rocnel Instagram page:
"It's not polishing. It was exploded with the lapping technique. It has perfect surface geometry. It is at 10,000 sand level. Produced on special request."

I had no idea Rocnel did custom orders, but I'm sure they'd be expensive!

That’s quite impressive. Why didn’t he do this for the 2022 Master Collection model to make if different from the standard model and add some value for the $200 extra? I think he did at one point say the MC may have “a different surface treatment”, so perhaps it was the plan at one point, but turned out not to be practical or cost effective.

I still got my 2020 after having sold my 2021. I was looking to hop back into the 2022 sailor after seeing this but there is an up charge for this service after speaking to him. This is an up charge from the MC price tag mind you which I would normally have never ordered but considered it for this finish. That’s pretty lousy as the MC has no objective difference than the regular sailor. I’ll pick it up next year when it’s standard. Or not. The guy is always improving his razor, things become outdated by the month.

Can you give us an idea of upcharge? He seems to like playing with finishes. I had never heard of Ziratsu until he did it on the Sailor. I am a big fan of all things shiny so the lapping is appealing but personally, I am ready for some geometry/knurling/mechanism revisions.

All of his current models with an L on the head are lap finished but the one in this video has been run more with a finer grit. I literally just purchased a standard sailor and would love it mirror polished for looks but honestly its still butter smooth with the brushed finish and the lapping work is top notch. I bet he is charging 200 or so and probably will only do it on an MC.

I want that.  Would send my 2020 to be refinished if Murat will do the handle too.

I am having a lost in translation moment.

What in the world does Murat mean by "It was exploded with the lapping technique"?

I am not sure. They might misspell..
Parlatildi (Turkish) = Polished
Patlatildi (Turkish) = Exploded
