2021/22 Rocnel Sailor Adjustable

I had not shaved in about 6 weeks. Hair was easily 3/8" long. I toyed with a beard. Mine itches like crazy. I tried to get over it. Couldn't.

Opened my 2020 up to 1.5 revolutions this morning. No clogging. No issue rinsing. No issue removing all of the hair in the first pass. I can't think of another razor that would be capable. It works exactly how I imagine a skrait would.

I liken the 20/21/22 Sailor to an adjustable WR2 but up to probably a 3.0mm+ gap.

Understand it for its quirks, embrace them, and enjoy playing with the settings.

If Murat would build this razor in Titanium  for me it could  be a reason for me to eliminate all the other razors in my den.  Not saying I would but I’m just talking about the shave.

Titanium would be nice and we all love our Sailors.  If you are a collector or just want a great shave from a beautiful product it is definitely worth the investment.

Back to reality.  I own one favorite and rare adjustable razor and the shave is slightly better than the 2020 Sailor LOOT sold me.  I shaved with a 1930's $25 German pocket travel set yesterday and it performed just as well.  A wakeup call to remind those who seek the perfect razor that Rocnel may not be the "one".  

LOOT commented that we should stop looking for flaws like misaligned etching, medallions popping out, or other issues and enjoy the razor.  I get his point but some of us CAN'T ignore imperfections.  OCD for detail is a curse of my constitution.  I see angles off by one degree and can't stop seeing it.  I see misalignment of text or logo etching and can't ignore it.  It is a curse but can be a blessing when I am checking details on expensive items.  In this case the etching alignment issue was easy to prevent but someone in QC didn't think it was important.  It is.

Bottom line: Rocnel Sailor is worth your investment and go for it if you can afford it, but don't expect perfection.  However you will have no trouble selling it for what you paid if you decide it is not what you expected.

He says (and take it with a pinch of salt) that he is going to first introduce a hybrid Sailor design
using a combination of steel and titanium to bring weight down.
At the very least it will take time.

Price is up €100 in 2 months - now €550! At least we’re at parity on €$

Another Sailor mystery (for me)

I can't figure this out how the blade is clamped on the Sailor....to me
it looks like it's most tightly clamped when its tightened fully to the 'dot' setting.

But then, as you loosen the knob , does this mean the clamping
is less rigid as you move up the settings?

Does the blade feel more loose with higher settings?  I will shave with mine in a few and see if I can determine if there is any play with the blade as the settings are changed.

No no no....I have no complaints....the blade does not feel loose at any point....Im just wondering,
out of interest, how blade clamping works in the Sailor.

To me it looked like the blade is clamped down tight when the knob is turned fully clockwise. (setting 0)
But even when you turn anticlockwise to go up from 1-5, the blade still holds firm....this seemed counter intuitive to me...
just wondering if anyone knows more about this mechanism and how it works.

There is a sprung plate between the base plate and the top cap which supports the blade from below. You have to increase the razor setting to 15 (2 1/2 full turns) before the blade rises above this plate and is not supported any more.

Tester28 question piqued my curiosity so I took some pics before my shave today.  Closed at the dot to one full rotation back to the dot.  Moriarty is correct the sprung plate rises keeping a grip on the blade. I noticed that the spring plate is affected by the curved blade acting as a counter spring. The gap between spring plate and cap opens a bit during the upward adjustment from the lowest setting. The blade is not just moving away from the base but it is unflexing too, changing the angle as well as the gap.  Interesting, probably unplanned but worked out great for the shave quality. Without a blade the spring plate stays in place throughout the range of adjustment.

Now I am curious if the later models have the same characteristic. Sounds like a question for the man with the most Sailors: LOOT
Edit: Looking at these pics today reminds me why I love this razor. It's iconic design is unlike anything else I own.

Just gonna leave this here.  Stellar shave yesterday.  I tried 0, 1, 2, and 3.  All good.  And to think if LOOT had not raved about it I would have missed the boat entirely.  I only have a couple of no matter what keepers, this is one of them.
