For me it’s easy. ETHOS Lavender is my number one. Excellent lavender natural scent with great smoothness, glide and post shave feel. I have tried lots of brands thru the years but I have kept only ETHOS as the simple scents are so clean and natural and along with the post shave serum it leaves my skin soft enough to keep the wife happy.

Noble Otter Lonestar
Nuavia Rossa
APR Fenchurch
Desmonds Barrow Joie de Vetiver
Eleven Bosco
Shannons Woodland Frost
SV Flying Mango
The Club Baccara
I honestly could go on and on.....
I love NO Lonestar, I wish they would release that again sometime, it seems it has been out of stock forever
Interesting thread. I commented early & have continued following comments. Since others have posted more than their #1 soap, I'll do the same here.
#1 Ethos Lavender
#2 Ethos Greenfresh
#3 Ethos Melange d'agrumes
#4 Martin de Candre Fougere
#5 Pannacrema Nuavia Verde
As you can see, Ethos is clearly my #1 soap. It is the absolute best soap base I have ever used. Ethos Lavender is the epitome of what a shave soap should be. I have used many soaps, some of which are AE, DG, GD NO, SV, & Zingari Man, to name just a few. I have tried multiple bases in these soaps as well as different scents. I had been in the soap rabbit hole for a few years before climbing out once I discovered Ethos. None of these other soaps work for me nearly as well as Ethos. This is, after all, about our own personal preference.
Ethos provides the consistent quality I expect. Scent - clean & natural. Latherability - simple, not difficult or time-consuming to create a wonderful lather. Slickness - this feature is essential, & Ethos is stellar in slickness. Residual slickness - no worries here, I can touch-up or buff with plenty of slickness. Post-shave feel - Ethos is in a league of it's own with post-shave. So many soaps leave my face feeling artificially moisturized, oily, or waxy. Ethos leaves my face feeling perfectly refreshed & cared for.

I have either purchased or tried many different shave soaps (just like dmshaver) with or without their after shave splashes and have come to several conclusions. Like experimental psychology and economics studies comparing the subjective qualities of expensive versus cheap (French) wines there is little to no correlation - an expensive wine is not necessarily better than a cheap wine. Apparently the context of the tasting, marketing hype/appearances and other subjective factors will influence one's perceptions or simplified "it's all in your head". Why do I say this ? Well I have tried very expensive soaps (you all know who they are) and find they are no better than some mass produced and inexpensive ones. I am sorry if this goes counter to some "fan boys" years of experience but it seems correct in my personal experience.
Nevertheless there are several top tier shave soaps that, for me, are the best in regards to lather quality, skin feel/hydration and scents - these opinions I am aware are entirely subjective. Also I would consider price important as a $100+ soap may not be twice as good as a $50 soap (actually not usually the case). For me the following represent my favorite soaps/aftershaves:
1. Ethos Melange & Greenfresh
2. DR Harris Arlington
3. Stirling Island Man
4. Martin de Candre Original

Ethos seems to be the top shave soap on the market right now.

I appreciate the statement but honestly I think there is no winner! I think there are a lot of great shave soaps out there and being a wet shaving hobbyist for about 18 years I’ve used a fare share of shave soaps throughout the yeas from the very first which was Proraso Green that I used almost exclusively for the first 5 years which to me is a classic that I still enjoy throughly now and then and will always be in my den. After that I went down the road of English shave soaps like a Castle Forbes as an example. Enjoyed them also. Then my first Artisan soaps B&M, Stirling and Catties Bubbles ( still use and enjoy all 3 brands and have added many, many others moving on to now and still enjoy the heck out of them. Some stand out in performance and some have scents I never get tired of even though their performance isn’t quite up to some of the other like Proraso Green for example it may not have the best slickness of any soap I’ve used but still love the hell out of it.
I’ve seen these kinds of threads before especially being heavily into razors both modern and vintage and again to me there is no best! So many different great razors out there and it’s all about what works for you and your beard and in the case of soaps you can add what works best for your skin.
I’m sure as witnessed in this thread that everyone has their favorites both for overall performance and for some scent is very important. Some folks like them really strong and some like them really subtle. For some it’s all about slickness and others main focus iis on post shave. No right or wrong. It’s what works best for the individual and many people have many soaps that fit their criteria and others stick with one or two brands forever. Sone people have a budget or a dollar amount they won’t go over for a shave soaps, razor or Shave brushes while others don’t have a budget and I can attest to that as I’ve had requests from customers for a custom made shave soap , Skin Food splash or EDP wanting me to use what I call extremely expensive aroma ingredients that would take a products price to a place that would shock most folks, so again to each his own and it’s called freedom of choice.
What I dislike about these type of threads is when people go off topic and feel the need to put effort into seriously bashing a brand! I’ve seen it happen over and over again throughout the years with razors, brushes, soaps and aftershaves etc. and honestly I can’t wrap my head around people that feel the need to do that. An even worse there are some that seem to relish in doing it to!
It especially bothers me in this day and age and the environment we are living in currently with businesses suffering financially or even being forced to close. So to bash a particular brand can only add to their financial plight. We are supposed to be in a historically gentlemanly like hobby so I commend those that conduct themselves in that manner. To those that feel the need to bash brands purposely I say shame on you! There’s no reason for doing that. Tell us about what you love about your top picks but we don’t need to hear what brands you seem to have hated for!
You asked for people to post up their top pick or picks and that’s fine and I get it. I’ve certainly used threads like this to learn about shaving items I’ve never heard of or tried before and in many cases it’s helped me discover new items that I acquire and thoroughly enjoy.
I appreciate your kind words but again I have a lot of friends who are soap makers, razor makers and brush makers that I have so much respect for and what they do each and every day to provide the wet shaving community with great shaving products wether hardware or software and I appreciate them all for their efforts.
So after my rant here’s my top pick and if I were forced to only have one soap in my den then it would certainly be Proraso Green shave cream. It’s got not only sentimental meaning to me but I love the scent and the history of the brand and being of Italian decent it’s been used in my family for years! Oh and I’ve learned how to get the most performance out of it as well.
Great shaves all
