The one thing I may suggest if you’re amenable to it is have a shave off of easily attainable razors. You have a vast and impressive collection but not all are attainable (I’m still hoping to stumble across a Gibbs) maybe something like price brackets or razors currently in production. It may allow for a few different razors to shine that may be overlooked by those of us hunting for discontinued and rare razors, this playdown might appeal to a broader audience, also add some longevity to this new thread and give the last one a run for its money. Either way it’ll be fantastic

Thanks for your input. This Shave Off will have as I mentioned only 3 categories for now and that would be Efficient, Very Efficient and Hyper Efficient so I'm going to list all the razors I have in my den along with some others that some members have already committed to sending me to put in the Shave Off. I'm open to any razor at any price range whether modern or vintage as long as it fits into one of those 3 categories and anyone who wants to send one they'd like put into the Shave Off can post up their choice and and we can evaluate it based on members combined opinion on the razor. For example if someone posts up why isn't a Feather SS in the Shave Off the answer would be it would be in a much milder category than any of the 3 we are focused on now. Not saying we might do some others later on down the road.

So good post and thank you!

Shave Off basic info:

So most of you know what a Shave off is all about. It's taking two razors and comparing them on the same face at the same time. The way I do my Shave Offs is by dividing my face into 4 sections. The reason I do this is because my whole right side of my face and especially my neck is much more difficult to shave as I have a nasty cowlick on my neck along with some weird beard growth patterns there as well. Also along my face near my ear and on my jawline. My left side is pretty much normal beard growth so much easier to shave. So each razor gets one section on the more difficult right side and one on the easier left to make things fair.

SSSST Technique:

Most that followed the Shave Off over on the other site know I use a technique I developed called the " Skin Stretch Short Stroke Technique " and I use this on every shave I do whether I'm just doing a normal daily shave or a Shave Off and I'll continue to do so in this Shave Off so my finding are that I can get a closer shave in less passes using this technique and with little no irritation. For those that have and do use the SSSST I've also added some new strokes to the mix which I will share. I'm going to put the SSSST and all the information on how to do it and some visuals as well in a separate post.

Blades used:

I'd like to use only one razor blade throughout the entire Shave Off but I'm open to suggestions. My thoughts were if I were to use some different blades I'd use one brand of blade for each category and for sure I'm using my favorite Feathers in the " Hyper Efficient " Category as I want to try and get the most out of all the razors in it and for me a Feather works best. Now the other blades I'm comfortable using are Polsilver and kai but I'm not opposed to other suggestions as well and I know someone brought up using a Wizamet in the Shave Off but the only concern I have is are they readily available to most people to purchase. I know everyone has their favorites but I want to use blades who's characteristics I know very well but like I said I'm open to suggestions. I do believe there has to be some consistency to each Shave Off and category.

 Modifications:

I feel that no razor should be modified in this Shave Off and should be used as they come from the manufacture meaning no shiming of a razor and stock handles used unless of course I have only a head and then I'll use one of my extra handles on the razor or if someone would like to send one I'm open to using it.

 Contributors:

So like in the past I will take contributors who would like a razor put into the Shave Off. I only have so many razors in my personal den and I also have some that don't qualify for this Shave Off. I have 3 confirmed contributors and I will acknowledge them as their razors are added to the list. Also if you want to contribute to a Shave Off with one of your razors please post it up in  the thread and also pm me so I can give you my address to send it to. The razor will be returned to you if it is eliminated by another razor in the Shave Off or if it makes it to the championship rounds when the category is over. Either way it will be shipped back to you in the same manner it is shipped to me. If it is a very expensive razor which I will probably get a few of those I'll match the insurance that you put on it when it is shipped to me when I send it back to you. If you have any questions on this please pm me and we can go over things.

 Categories and Shave Offs:

As I've posted up there will be 3 categories " Efficient " Very Efficient " and " Hyper Efficient " and the razors will be listed so you can see them and evaluate them for yourselves and I'd enjoy any feedback, input or suggestions you may have on each razor.  Here is the big question I have to ask should we do one category at a time and finish it up and then move on to the next or should we do one from let's say the "Efficient category"  and then one from the " Very Efficient category " and then another from the " Hyper Efficient category "  and then go back to the beginning and start all over picking out two more razors?  The thought of rotating is kind of cool except it has one big problem that I see. doing it that way rather than getting one category finished before moving on is when a contributor sends a razor to me it could possibly be tied up for a lot longer than it would have the way we always did it plus that would also mean that all the razors would have to be in my den before even starting and I've have a ton of razors to watch over. So I'm leaning on the way we have done it in the past but again I'm open to suggestions.

I can say that on the other World Shave Off Showdown was pretty much drama free and members were in most cases very amicable to each other and I'm hoping that this one can be the same. I realize we all have our opinions on how a razor works for us and it may not compare to my findings or others who post their experiences using a particular razor but we can express our differences without insults or condescending remarks. So let's all show respect to each other and try to keep this thread drama free!

All adjustable razors will be set on max setting in this Shave Off. If it is a razor that is considered an adjustable like the Rockwell that has multiple plates then we will use the most efficient plate and place the razor in the category most agree it belongs. Also some razors have more than one baseplate but are not considered adjustable razors and for example let's say it has two plates that fit two categories then it can be entered into the two categories. I'm sure there will be much discussion on this subject and I'm open to all comments, input and suggestions.

UPDATE:

Scoring System for the " Most Efficient Razor " Shave Off

Hello friends I have been working on the Scoring System and I thought I'd post it up here in the guidelines. Although the structure of the system is the same as it was in the last Shave Off I did " The Smoothest Razor " the percentages have been changed and it's pretty easy to see that the main focus is on efficiency but it is not the only thing the razor will be judged on.

Scoring System:

1. Efficiency - up to a possible 60 points

2. Smoothness - up to a possible 25 points

3. Maneuverability - up to a possible  5 points

4. Balance - up to a possible  5 points

5. Glide - up to a possible 5 points

If you have any feedback or suggestions on the Scoring System please feel free to post up your thoughts.

Thanks

Summary:

So this is how far I got with the guidelines and if you think there should be more added to this section please post up your thoughts. I'd like to get this section done by no later than the end of the week so with any luck we can start the actual Shave Offs next weekend.

Thank you all and great shaves!

I say stick to one blade, whichever is your favorite. I would also advice to try sticking to solid bar vs solid bar and OC vs OC.
Thanks Frank! Looking forward to it.

James I've been going back and forth on this. I had only a chance to do a side by side with it comparing it to a WR2 Ti 1.35 where it matched it. So will the production version knowing it will be more efficient be as efficient as a 1.45 or 1.55? It should so yeah I'll move it into the Hyper Efficient category so good catch!

Hello bud!

Ok I get what your saying but don't you think that there are SB razors that are as efficient and sometimes more so than a OC? Or are you looking at the the WR2 1.55 Ti DC and the WR2 OC 1.55 SS ? As I listed both because if I get l lucky someone with a 1.55 OC will send it my way for a Shave Off because based on my experience with SS WR2 OC's they are very Efficient and maybe I'd even call them aggressive and I don't use that term to often.

I agree that attainable or previously attainable razors should be included rather than unique models (ie Titanium RS10).

I think using the standard model and handles that come with it makes the most sense.

Please consider picking the matches with random draws - I hear Emma is available to pick them from a hat. Ideally categories should be 8 razors but if 10 or 12 then need to be creative with the brackets. In fact, pick all the match ups ahead of time and we can have a "Bracket Challenge" before March Madness ... maybe call it " A Cut Above - The Challenge"

Use any blade or soap you want as the only common factor is your face and you want to be comfortable.

Regarding the Janus it should be out in the next 4-6 weeks so perhaps when the first reviews come out we can decide if it's hyper efficient or not.

How about the Yates Precision Razor High gap plate as an efficient contender ?

Just my 2 cents Mr Enabler

I think using the standard model and handles that come with it makes the most sense.

Please consider picking the matches with random draws - I hear Emma is available to pick them from a hat. Ideally categories should be 8 razors but if 10 or 12 then need to be creative with the brackets. AJ you are bad! Don't you be picking on Emma! LMAO! Although I do think I should pick from a random hat or box because remember when I used to just pick what I wanted and I got accused of being bias by a couple of people and that's when we went to picking from a hat. Ok need to put that in the outline.

No I'll use razors that are hard to find or get like a Vintage Toggle or Tradere etc but something like a RS 10 Titanium where there's only 10 every made doesn't make sense at all. Same would go for a Ti BBS1.. don't think we will see many of them on the market.

This list is just beginning to fill up. There will be more razors added and the Yates Precision can be added. Mark knows that razor so I'll see what category he thinks it should go into.

As far as blades goes it's a toss and I'm going to go with either one blade the entire Shave Off or using one blade for each category. Not going to switch around within a category as I told you what happened last week when I used a Polsilver in a razor I normally use a Feather in. Shave just wasn't as close so it's either one way or the other but there has to be consistency in blades used.

Thanks for the input my friend!

There are many solid bar razors that are more efficient than OC razors. I just feel like the solid bar version of a razor will have an advantage in smoothness over its OC counterpart and the reverse when it comes to efficiency.
