Wolfman WR2 Head Discussion

Thanks for posting guys....Im beginning to appreciate why the DC is an option for some of you.

Ive noticed that Wolfman doesn't allow the option to pick up an extra baseplate while shopping....you have to buy an entire set (cap and plate) together...does this mean that
each top cap is made to only fit the baseplate that a customer orders?

While in theory the caps and baseplates could be interchangeable I’ve read multiple times that it is recommended to keep the top cap with the base plate it came with to avoid fitment issues. I’ve never mixed and matched plates and caps so I can’t comment on if it would work.

1.05 vs 1.15

Results - too close to call. They’re both great and I’m keeping them both. I’ll play around some more with this half and half shaves and see if I can make any real statement. Both are comfortable and efficient razors.

I use WR2 0.95 and WR2 1.15 for about 2 weeks.
WR2 0.95 with Feather Blade is soft and lacks efficiency.
WR2 1.15 with a blade Gillette Platinum is a very effective machine, but it is a bit too much aggression.
I will work on the technique and pick up the blades. But probably a gap of 1.05 would be perfect for me.

James's razors are great. They are very popular with us in Russia. It's hard for us to buy them.

I will add to my post.
WR2 0.95 is similar in aggressiveness to Mülle R89, Merkur 34 and Masamune SB. But he is more effective than these razors.
WR2 1.15 for aggressiveness is similar to the Blackbird SB or ATT R2. But shaving with this razor (WR2) is much more comfortable.

SS WR1 .94mm SB vs Ti WR2 1.35mm SB

I've run this shave twice, switching sides of my face.  Both of these razors are the highest gaps in each head.  The WR1 head is a little odd in I find it to actually smooth out with increased gap.  The 94 is just as, if not smoother than the 74.  The WR2 seems to follow logic and lose some smoothness through the gap, though not much in the SB versions.  OC is a different story.  The WR1 head also maintains consistent blade feel through a shave, no matter the gap.  The blade you feel on the first stroke is pretty much the same one you feel on the last stroke.  The WR2 head loses blade feel with each pass.  On the first N to S pass the WR2 has ample blade feel but less than a WR1.  On the second S to N pass the WR1 maintain the vast majority of it's blade feel while almost the opposite can be said of the WR2.  The WR2 has much less blade feel, even with a 135 gap.  It's still buttery.

The SS94 with a solid 100mm WRH1 is the heaviest combo I have while the TiWR2 is the lightest.  While the WR2 is more maneuverable, the 94 didn't bother me at all.  While weight is an obvious difference, it's not something I really notice or look for.  I knew I liked heavier razors, now I know I like the light ones too.

As to efficiency differences between the SS and Ti versions of the same gap, I've yet to compare the WR2 in like gaps but my feeling is there is a slight drop in efficiency.  In a couple weeks I should be in a position to run 125 vs 125 in SB versions of both heads, if anyone is interested.

Since the WR2s started showing up in the mailbox I've been trying to decide which head I prefer...both.  I thought I'd end up keeping one or the other but I've wound up selling every other modern razor I own but one.  That Timeless 95's days are numbered too.  I'll be Wolfman exclusive shortly.  I've owned the vast majority of the high end razors on the market, DuFour obviates them all.  I no longer need razors from a fist full of artisans but rather a fist full of one artisan's gear.

Thanks James! Nice review! Please share the 1.25 ss vs Ti after you have some time. I still can’t tell much difference between the 1.05 and 1.15. I might step back from the wr2 for a couple days and then return in an attempt to find any meaningful difference.

LOOT thanks for the review James. I'm Canadian and the waiting list is so long. Glad that a few have these great razors from a great artisan. With Karve, Timeless, and ATT so accessible sometimes it makes no sense to wait so long. Glad your enjoying them.

I can't offer much help with the 1.05 as it's the only gap I've not tried. With that said, I think if one were to graph efficiency from 95 to 135 with a straight line, the intermediate gaps would fall on the line. You should certainly be able to tell the difference, maybe 10-15% increase in efficiency? It's not a night and day difference kind of thing, it's more subtle to me in progression. 2 gaps jump will get your attention tho. The WR2 gaps are like a Gillette adjustable except Wolfman jumps 3+ clicks on a Gillette.
