Wolfman WR2 Head Discussion

Just wanted to compile a reference of changes added to the WR2 since release (as of 1/27/2019).

Please Note:

• Additional Options are for Stainless Steel only
  
• Pricing is still the same but now is broken down by head and handle
  
• Darwin Handle has no additional size options
  
• Machining in the past was done ahead of time now but is now being done on the spot so there will be a 2-3 week wait before items are made and ready to ship.
  
• All prices are in CAD
  

WR2 Head ($300)

• Added Open and Dual comb options (solid bar standard)
  
• Added 1.05mm, 1.15mm, and 1.25mm blade gap options (0.95mm standard)
  

Handles ($200)

• Added length size options for the following handles
  • WRH1 - 80mm and 100mm (90mm standard)
    
  • WRH2 - 80mm and 100mm (90mm standard)
    
  • WRH3 - 90mm (96mm standard)
    
  • WRH7 - 98mm (90mm standard)
    
• Added an option to hollow out the handle which reduces the weight by approx. 30 grams ($20)
  

I had my first shave today with the WR2 and wanted to share some of my initial impressions. This Razor is a very smooth Shaver. I used a Feather Blade, just as I do with my BBS-1, and was able to get very good results with it. I would describe this Razor as a medium aggressive Razor, but on the milder side of medium. This Razor is not as efficient as my BBS-1, but it’s not far behind. To compare it to some other Razors I’ve used in terms of efficiency, I would say it’s every bit as smooth as a Timeless .68 OC, but a touch more efficient. I would also say it’s every bit as smooth as my Charcoal Goods lvl 2 SB, but a touch less efficient. I think it’s just as smooth as my .67 WR1 SB, but just a touch less efficient. For me personally, this would be an excellent Daily Driver. I feel like I could shave with this Razor every day without any irritation, and still get a nice clean shave. That being said, I would also need to shave every day, as the efficiency doesn’t get me as long a lasting BBS shave as some of my more efficient shavers do. This Razor gives good audible feedback, and there is still some Blade feel to it, although it isn’t as much as some of my other Razors. I personally enjoy some Blade feel with my Razors. For those that like an aggressive, ultra efficient Razor, this ones not for you. For those of you that enjoy a WR1 .61 Standard Gap, the Timeless .68 OC, or the Charcoal Goods lvl 2, this may be more to your liking. This Razor definitely has a place in my Rotation, but I wouldn’t hesitate to snag a WR2 with a larger blade gap should the opportunity arise in order to add some increased efficiency for those days where I have several days growth, or just want a longer lasting BBS Shave. I hope this helps those of you that are trying to get an idea of where this Razor sits as far as feel/efficiency are concerned.

I have and love the 0.74 OC. The WR2 is far from that in terms of blade feel.
I used to have the 0.61 OC then moved to the 0.74, more blade feel and deeper shave but still smooth. I am now waiting for a 0.86 and I am eager to compare to the 0.74

You will not be a fan of the standard gap wr2 if you like blade feel imo.

I am the guy that generally likes, and only uses, the more efficient razors.  However, I also appreciate a wide range of razor efficiencies because I don't shave on a schedule and generally reach for razors based on equal amounts of growth and whim.  With that said, I had 24hrs growth after using a WR1 86OC yesterday.  There was not a whole lot of growth to begin with, which based on previous conversation here, I figured was an acceptable amount.  I grabbed an unmounted, for a reason, Darwin handle and set off to work.

The WTG pass was nice with acceptable blade feel for me and I found it right away.  I found it and kept it the entire pass. It was audible and very smooth.  I noticed and appreciated the additional head weight over the WR1. I relathered and went ATG.  The blade feel was gone and so was audible feedback for the most part.  I maintained the same angle but could not tell it was working.  It was leaving a much thicker residual layer of soap, even visible.  XTG was the same story.  Just buttery smooth "is this thing working?" goodness.  

The result was 90% BBS.  It won't last long.  It will take some time to get used to the razor.  A heavier handle will help me.  Heck, any other handle will improve it.  I like the looks of a Darwin but I was reminded why it is unmounted and virtually unused (not a B/S/T invite).  It's too light, too narrow at the primary grip point, and it's slippery in my hand.

I will also answer my own question about blade loading. For me, yes the 4 corners certainly does improve blade loading over slots.  It's almost idiot proof.  I can and do misload a WR1 requiring adjustment, I'm not sure one could misload the 4 corners without really putting forth some effort.

As far as efficiency comparisons go, I really have none.  I don't have nor have used a WR1 below a 74SB and it's not close.  Maybe I could find something comparable on a vintage Gillette adjustable.  But given my experience with the differences in gaps from 74 to 94, the 61 comparison makes perfect sense in my head.

I look forward to getting my hands on wide open WR2OC.  Bring on the GAP!  If the WR2 head maintains it's smoothness like a WR1 does, I'm going to love it.

I don’t have a .61 OC, but I do have a .67 SB as well as OC. For me, the Blade feel is very similar to these, maybe just a hair less. I know this is all very much a YMMV thing, but I can definitely feel the blade when using the WR2. It’s nowhere close to a WR1 .74 or Blackbird in terms of blade feel though.Hope this helps.

Anybody have any idea when James is going to release the more aggressive blade gaps and the dual comb?
