That right there is a well used coticule!
Nice find! I hope to get my hands on one someday. Never tried a coti, but I sure would like to...I hear honing on them garnets is unlike anything else in terms of feel and feedback...
Thanks for sharing!

They are a temperamental bunch of stones. They do have a learning curve but once you dial one in, smooth, smooth, smooth. I will assume room temperature well before I completely figure them out.
Nice finds!
I love coticules and keep a few around. They all have their personalities, but that applies to most naturals. I've never had a coticule that wouldn't give me an excellent edge - though it sometimes took a while to figure out how to get the best edge off one.
I've only ever found two in the wild. They were of the 'Deep rock' kind. Nice hones.

A wild find at a antique store/thrift store/junk shop. Stop for a bite to eat, noticed this shop across the street, went in and found this stone along with a few other things. Was told it came from a retired barber and there might be more. I nice rock that is very heavy for its size and appears very hard.
I've got to wild find coticles. I tend to like the ones with the natural slate edges rather than the ones that are glued. I know in the end It really does not matter. I'll try to post a picture of mine later. I was lucky to find both of them at the same place about 4 years ago along with some other great stones.
A ugly duckling becomes a beautiful swan.
I found this crud covered diamond in the rough at a estate sale. At first I thought it was a Thuri by its weight to size due to the stone being black in a dark room. It was not until I went outside after paying that I saw a Coti under the crud. A soak in simple green and a good lapping brought the stone back to life. Has a surface void that some CA glue will take care of easily. First three pictures are the condition when I rescued.
After soak and lapping
