Mine arrived last week. I used it for the first time over the weekend on a 3 days worth of beard growth. My initial impression were that it's a mild razor, which I really like. It certainly does feel like the Merkur 34c but lighter and better. Better in the sense that the handle is awsome and the blade is held much more securely to me. The razor head covers the entire blade - a big plus.

I have very thick heavy beard growth and whilst it was mild razor, I was able to use this with ease and with 3 passes I achieved a very close DFS. The shave was comfortable and for me is an ideal daily shaver. I had been using the Muhle Rocca R96 with black handle for the the last month and it was a welcome change.

This may not be for you if you prefer heavy razors or want something more aggressive. For me the razor performed really well, the finish and value is great too.

The Feather was the only blade that properly cut it for me (pun intended) with my old Gillette Travel Tech — I hope it works well in the MJ-90.

Ok, I shaved with a Feather. It's the only razor I've used where I didn't feel any risk that the Feather would bite. Even still, I think the main issue with this shaver is this: because of the decreased blade gap, the razor only cuts in a very narrow range of angle. To have an efficient shave would likely require a lot of use so your hand naturally finds the correct angle all the time. If not its going to take a lot more strokes, which can lead to irritation. The biggest risk here I think would ironically be for newer DE shavers, who might try to use more pressure to get the razor to cut instead of focusing on angle. I even found myself doing it a little.

I'll have more tries with this one. Again, it may be good simply as an ATG razor for me.

Also, my best shave with it so far has been with ABC soap, a lather that is thinner while still providing great slickness. I shaved with B&M glissant and I felt the super-dense lather may have been too much for the small blade gap. YMMV of course.

Good observations there, surfshaver. Another idea that came to mind (I’m probably not the first one to have this) is shimming the razor head to increase the blade gap. That small change could make a big difference in how the MJ-90 shaves.

I find that with the mild razors, you need to increase the angle, i.e., get the handle up a little. You don't want the ride the safety bar at all.

Shave #4 and my opinion is unchanged. The MJ90 is simply too mild to achieve a BBS shave, only SAS/DFS at best. It is very smooth and comfortable, but those characteristics are negated by its inefficiency.

Anyone else on this thread ever tried any of the Stealth Slants? I liked using that with Kai's and enjoyed it for less growth. As far as the original Baby Smooth, it wasn't for me. If I have one day or two days of growth, is it going to cut okay with the more sharp blades? My skin and beard prefer 3-5 days growth in order to feel comfortable after the shave.

Hi Zac-- the Stealth Slant was the one Razorock razor I couldn't get my hands on. It gets rave reviews from most people who have used it. I'd love to try one some time because I haven't had good results with the other "torqued" slants I've tried. My favorite slant so far, and the only one that I've kept, is the Ikon #102. It's an interesting design, and I'm not quite sure how it works, but it does work well.

I have the original Baby Smooth, and I find it takes some usage to be really comfortable because the correct angle is so different than most DEs, and the blade is a bit exposed.

i know what you mean about being more comfortable with a few days growth. I prefer at least one day off in between 3 pass shaves.

Getting back to the thread, I was thinking about selling the MJ-90, but now I may keep it for a very specific use: the sides of my neck. I have come to the point where I don't try to get full BBS on my neck, because the skin on the sides and lower neck is very sensitive and prone to razor bumps -- on those areas I can't go fully ATG without some irritation. But this razor is so mild that I've started to use it just for these areas. I'll see how it goes.

It's an interesting idea-- keeping a razor just for specific parts of your shave.

So I have had 3 shaves with the MJ-90 and a Kai blade. Works well and have been happy overall. It's got great build quality and finishing is great on mine. As far as the mildness vs aggressiveness and efficiency. I think there is a decent range of angle but I found that there is about 2 ways I found it to cut comfortably. With a bit of pressure behind the base plate, I found my skin fine and irritation free after a 2-3 pass shave.

I may try this razor a couple times for a head shave but I may keep this depending on how many other blades I like in this razor. For reference, I was using a BBS-1 almost exclusively as well as a Muhle R41. Quite a bit different compared to my preferred razors.

It seems that the MJ-90 will get replaceable base plates... https://www.instagram.com/p/BWdPjdaD4ss/
