Today was the first time I've ever tried a straight razor. I picked this one up off of Ebay mainly because it was less than $20 and shave-ready. I only did WTG strokes and only shaved my cheeks but I really enjoyed those few strokes Big Grin Now I need to find a paddle strop so I can keep practicing.

Palm strop will keep it smooth until you can get a paddle strip....

When I first started I got a Poor Man’s strop and balsa strop from Larry at Whipped Dog. I used rubber cement to secure the leather strop to a piece of 1x4 that I still use for paddle stripping.

The balsa strop will come with iron oxide and chromium oxide pasted one on each side, and a bit of extra powder to refresh the pastes when needed.

With this setup, you can keep your razor fresh for quite some time before needing to worry about honing, and when I bought it all as a kit, it was less than $20. Well worth that investment.
