Shave 3 ・ 112 g left ・ $8.00 / shave

The Vector’s Lite baseplate and a Kai Mild blade. A match made in heaven. Smooth as butter. Sharp as a mother-in-law’s stare. One pass. Done. No blood, no burn, no regret.

But here’s the catch: the blade turns to rust faster than a Ford in a Pittsburgh winter. Not the edge, mind you. That stays sharp, whispering sweet nothings to my stubble. It’s the sheath, the wrapping, the thing that keeps it all civilized. Little orange freckles start creeping in after only a few shaves. All told I got seven days and seven glorious shaves out of the blade. But now it’s speckled with oxidation, like an old battleship left too long at sea. Time to toss it.

That's interesting.  FWIW the Kai Captain Titan Protouch MG is my favorite mild blade, and I don't recall ever having any discoloration.  I just binned my last one after 10 shaves - not because it was discolored or more than negligibly degraded, but because I was down to a dime a shave, so why not grab a fresh one?  I'll pay closer attention next time.

A question. Do you guys leave your blades in the razor? Just rinse and let dry?

I’ve probably got a case of OCD but I’ve always taken my blade out after every shave and I spray with 70% alcohol and then rinse both. I always wipe the razor down and with the blade I put it on the small hand towel I always have on the countertop when I shave. I’ve never had blade rust. It sounds like a bit of work but it literally takes me less than a minute to do.

I’m just curious how many just rinse their razors without taking the blade out.

As straight razor user for the most, washing and cleaning all my gear after each shave is something that is just automatic to me.
The oldest Kai Protouch MG I still have is from my absolute first AC blades sample and it’s still flawless, never seen a trace of rust on them.

Also come from straight shaving, and a life in racing, so thoroughly clean and dry all hardware after every use; difficult to imagine anybody not thoroughly disassembling, cleaning and drying religiously post shave

Perhaps Bouki is suffering the effects of a salt water climate more than questionable maintenance practices or Kai quality. Having lived oceanfront on a few occasions, can attest the impacts on anything metallic from home fixtures to bicycles and autos is dramatic; that would rationalize his experience of blade corrosion congruous with his prose regarding Pittsburgh and US built autos.
