(or a reasonable facsimile thereof)

As it happens, I ordered PAA CaD and Clubguy two weeks ago.  That order was largely the result of my rekindled interest in the vintage shaving and grooming scents that I grew up with.  These are scents I may have seen my dad or uncles use, or smelled at the local barber shop, and possibly even used myself as a young man.  So it is with great interest that I have been reading the recent related discussion by more discriminating shavers than me.

Those of you who read the fine print underneath "Memory Lane Monday" will see that exactness is not guaranteed.  I added the disclaimer for a few reasons.  First it makes some allowance for my limited ability to to distinguish between faithful and more approximate replicas, or to describe scents clearly - especially the details.  Second, the leeway allows for homages which - perhaps by design - are not exact replicas.

This is the case with PAA Clubguy, which differs by design from Pinuad Clubman, to which Clubguy is an homage.  Fragrantica readers describe Clubman notes as "Oakmoss, Citruses, Herbal Notes, Spicy Notes".  OTOH the Clubguy product page, lists the Clubguy notes as "Top: Talc, Bergamot, Lime, Rosemary &  Spearmint. Mid: Geranium, Lavender, Pepper, Tobacco. Base: Tonka Bean, Amber, Oakmoss, Vanilla. Fresh Citrus, Woody, Spicey, Green & Clean!"  Douglas Smythe, the proprietor of PAA, describes his thinking on the above referenced product page.

I have no trouble discerning the nod to Pinaud when I sniff the products, so I am satisfied as far as "memory lane value" goes.  I bought the soap/AS set, and IMO they are both fine products, and I am satisfied with both.  If my dad could magically come back to life for one last shave, I think he would want to know where he could find them.

Great post HS. I have used this puck a couple of times this month as per your trip down memory lane. Something about the growing up passage of boyhood to manhood - watching your dad or pappy shave thinking how brave they are. . Maybe if they were using an R41?  Old Spice and british leather were the two I remember growing up around. Being a youth in KY, I don't think our local rednecks [and I am one so I can use the term freely ] would ever use a French created [pinaud] or German created [tabac] AFS. Those are actually my current favorites along with Floid Amber, Ethos DB, Ethos Honeysuckle, Ethos Mysore, and Proraso Sandalwood - Spanish and Italian and artisan creations again not in the realm of the "overall wearing" shavers of which I am a proud member.

Glad you bought the Clubman. I am going to use it again this week per your reminder of how great it is!  The Rive Gauche - Barbasol  by PAA I found to be the best attempt at that fragrance. I used Barbasol goo as a young man.... I tried goading Frank into making a Rive Gauche cousin namely per my experience in wearing that EDT by YSL. My wife never and I mean never says or notes my scent trail. When I spritz with that, I get the nod of approval. Unfortunately, I am out of the original. The current attempts are too clean and sharp, and don't have that rounded spicy base that the old ladies in my sphere grudgingly like. ?.

Frank, Old Spice or Rive Gauche?!  Come on Italian Stallion.!

Thanks for the kind words Tommy, and kind words aside, I enjoyed reading your comments.  I especially like your ideas for enlisting Frank's expertise.

I think i bought this from Neroli last year per his dislike for oud. I love the stuff, and this base is great - unctuous with emu oil. [Image: bb738f8cc92cdd554b54cebb802b74df.jpg]

Mike’s Bay Rum (Mike’s Natural Soaps) bay & bergamot
Shave 25 ・ 82 g left ・ $0.64 / shave

So there you have it – a week with Mike’s Bay Rum, and I’m grinning from ear to ear. The shaves have been nothing short of miraculous. Slick enough to send a figure skater into orbit. And the cushion? I could lose a Buick in this lather. What about the irritation? None. Nada. Zip. Even with my heavier razors, it’s been as calm as a librarian’s afternoon.

Today, I gave the Feather AS-D2 a whirl – a razor so timid it could shave a bunny, but when you get the angle just right, it hums along like a scalpel. Two passes, and bam – I’m smoother than a squid.

Neroli... Had it about one year. It is not overpowering. Just the right amount of Tom Ford vibe to pique the desire to bathe in Oud Wood. And I did. My dog smells like TF now from me loving his neck.

Ok thank you... You saved me $40 with the usage of the word "oud".
My schnozz just can't get excited in any oud scents... thankfully (for my wallet).
I get ya. I ordered some oud and played with it. I couldn't get to something I liked. I'll have to play with it again sometime.
Besides, who needs oud when you can have SANDALWOOD!
