Glad you asked Neroli. I only have dupes on a few AFSs. Ethos DB, Saponificio Varesino Felce Aromatica, and Stirling Spice. Wish i had loaded up on Fine Santal but I digress.

I did that very compare in today's shave. Threw on Stirling and then a dose of the Original. And i played the whole interpretation of the two as I cleaned up the razor.

Stirling is louder, sharper, and not as "powdery" - but no mistaking who it's first cousin is. Shulton is magical right? It is rounder and softer. I think the carnation note in the Shulton shines through. Stirling is edgier - but that Shulton, I guess nobody can get that vibe exactly the same. Stirling comes closest to my nose. It is more brash whilst the Shulton is polished. My dad and grandpa always had a bottle rolling in their bathrooms. I wish I had grabbed the ole mugs and the milk bottles. B&M and PAAs versions are second cousins. I find both colder and not as warm as Shulton and Stirling. The soft carnation and powder accord is absent to me in those pux. I must admit that Tabac and some version of Spice has to be in my den.... With reinforcements and backups.

I have a few vintage bottles and they don't seem to be degrading. Maybe they are like fine wine and the aging is making them smell better. ?.

Didn't someone a couple of years back claim to have the genuine Shulton, or was that a new recipe coming out of the old factory?

Thank you for all your details, TC!
I can't wait for Stirling to bring it back at some point! I like both B&M and PAA Cold Spices quite a bit, so I'm very excited for the Stirling, to fill out the OS rack Smile
Glad I have a couple pucks (and sticks) of the tallow Tabac, and I definitely need to pull it/them out more often. I don't know why I don't use it more. But, then again, I still have "new" soaps from summer that I haven't used yet :/

Shave 22 ・ 87 g left ・ $0.73 / shave

So, here’s the plan for 2025: drag my LDL cholesterol below 100, read a mystery every night like my life depends on it, and use up one entire puck of shaving soap. Just one. Oh, and the kicker: reduce my soap hoard by ten percent because apparently, I’ve been stockpiling soap like the end of days involves a lot of shaving.

Progress? Inspired by vtmax, I’ve decided to 3017 a puck. Maybe this Bay Rum. It’s tough sticking with one soap while all the other pucks are singing their siren songs, but I like how tidy my desk looks with only one soap on deck. Meanwhile, I’m plowing through all the Sherlock Holmes stories. Pure entertainment there. And my old body is running smooth on oatmeal, apples, and lettuce.

But the most gratifying part of this whole undertaking isn’t eating like a rabbit or wallowing through the annals of Victorian crime. Nope, it’s giving away soap. I keep a spare puck in my bag because you never know when someone will need a random act of lather. My barbers? They’re now lathering up courtesy of Bouki. Folks at work and church? Shaving like royalty. Friends and relatives? Oh, they’re getting sudsed up real good, too. So far, I’ve given away about a kilo of the stuff, and it’s still only January. Kinda makes me feel good when I see that surprised look on their faces.

Bouki Pulling for you getting the LDL down. Keeping blood work in the normal range is a part of our aging. Those youthful years were so innocent.

Over three weeks now on the 3017 journey and loving it, mostly for its simplicity and fidelity. Hoping it sticks around for a time. The Valobra AOS certainly helps the trek.

Reading an Orkney Tapestry by George Mackay Brown. He was a great writer and poet. Miss those islands and inspired to get back soon.

HS - very curious about that?! That recipe would be awesome for someone like Frank or Will to have.

Martin de Candre - Absinthe

From the jar, it was virtually all mint. But upon lathering, the mint completely fades, and it becomes a duet of anise and the signature MDC resin scent.

Mountain ops messed up and opened an area (dropped the rope), which shouldn't have been opened because the lift was broken this morning. About a dozen and a half of us had to get lifted out on snowmobile by ski patrol. Not a bad spot to get stuck for a little while, at least.

Agreed Tommy.

I have all the original aromatic notes that Shulton used. What is not known is how many of them were synthetic and how many were natural. In discussions with Gareth at The Shave Supply I mentioned that every note listed could be done using all natural aromatics. Will it be close to the original I’m not sure but in the back of my mind I’ve been thinking about giving it a try at some point as I don’t offer a Barbershop scent and it has some personal meaning to me as a kid that’s pretty much all my Dad used and for years I used to do “ Old Spice Sundays “ as my SOTD in memory of my dad. I had a great collection of the original juice, talc powder and the mugs etc but all melted in the fire this past March.

It’s easy to find the dupe fragrance oil and make a copy of Old Spice but I wouldn’t go that route. I’d want to start it from scratch.

The newer version is missing the warmth and signature powdery note the original had.
