Oud is also the Arabic name for a stringed instrument, the ancestor of the lute and guitar. Played with a pick, its notes tumble out one at a time, solitary and plaintive. A small drum, tapped deftly with fingers, lends a heartbeat to its melodies. Lately, as I shave with my King of Oud soap, I’ve taken to playing oud music in the background. The rich, winding strains suit the scraping, and the pun pleases me – a small, private symmetry to start the day.
