Buttero Hard Soap (Abbate y La Mantia)
Italian leather
Shave 2
A “buttero” is an Italian cowboy from the Maremma, a rugged region of southern Tuscany punctuated by swamps, beaches, vineyards, and cliffs. For centuries, butteri have been herding cattle and horses there. They typically wear wide-brimmed fedoras, white shirts, somber vests and trousers, neckties, and long leather boots. They look sort of like American cowboys dressed for Sunday.
I’m happy to say I’ve never sniffed a buttero, but I can’t imagine they would smell as nice as this soap. The puck is the color of milk chocolate and has a spicy-leathery scent that could almost be mistaken for a slice of rich cake. If Wyoming cowboys smelled like this, I’m sure the West would be a little less wild.
