Koké (Abbate y La Mantia) Pacifique
Shave 1

Just as I was throwing my empty jar of Spitfire into the trash, the mail lady drove up and handed me a small box from Maggards – more soap. One tub done and another begun. I feel like I’m just treading water at this point. Inside the box was Abbate y La Mantia’s new hard soap, Koké. It’s named after the French artist Paul Gauguin, who lived in Tahiti, where he created some of his most famous paintings. I’ve liked Gauguin ever since my high school French teacher gave me a print of one of his Tahitian paintings. A little part of that picture is reproduced on this soap’s label. So I guess I bought the soap for the memories.

The scent, called Pacifique, is meant to evoke dense, lush vegetation during a rainstorm. Top notes of bergamot, pimpinella, and rhubarb recall the smell of the air just before the clouds burst. Heart notes combine spicy ginger with animal notes and the crisp sweetness of white pear for a fruity accord. As the scent settles, base notes of vine leaves, Tahitian vanilla, and guaiac wood add a woody finish. Unfortunately, there isn’t a lot of green in the mix, and I mostly smell grapes, rhubarb, pear, and some unusually dry vanilla. Apart from the vanilla, these really aren’t the smells of the tropical Pacific. I was expecting papaya, mango, banana, jasmine, grapefruit, plumeria, and coconut. Instead I got a nice summer garden in Tuscany. Nevertheless, the soap smells alright, and a touch of menthol keeps it feeling light.

Don't feel bad Bouki, I have almost 200 and 5 more on the way. My son told me I have an addiction and my wife says I'm a hoarder. I have roughly 30 or 40 that I want to sell or trade but I've been too lazy to post on the Facebook groups.

I'm right there with Oasisdave.  I'm not on Facebook...is it easier to sell/trade there than on the BST?
