Mumtaz (Grooming Dept) oriental cologne
Shave 2
The fragrance of this soap was inspired by Guerlain’s Shalimar, a complex oriental perfume first released in 1921. The perfume was named after the Shalimar gardens in Lahore, which the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan built for his wife Mumtaz Mahal. This soap is named after her. As a side note, Shah Jahan also built the Taj Mahal for his beloved wife to serve as her mausoleum.
Unfortunately, despite my high hopes, the soap doesn’t smell exactly like Shalimar perfume. It has the citrus, florals, musk, leather, and woods, but in different proportions, and I’m not getting much vanilla. Instead, I detect the faint aroma of a freshly snuffed candle. It’s unusual. The scent of the soap reminds me somewhat of Noble Otter’s Hamami. Not bad, just odd.
The base of this soap is Kairos SE 2023. It’s slightly lighter and less oily than Declaration Grooming’s milksteak base but performs just as well. I used Blackland’s Sabre (level 2) to shave. My first experience with this GEM-style razor a few months ago was painful, but today’s shave was divine. The difference? The first time, I used a light vegan lather. Today, I whipped up a thick, slick, and abundant heap of well-larded lather. Sometimes, it’s all about pairing the right lather with the right razor.
