Consecutive Daily Shaves - # 2,025

Had a great shave with this soap 1st time using it. A firmer soap and while not normally a bowl latherer, samples dictate the need. Even so I got a rich and dense leather that felt great during and after the shave. It rinses clean and easy off the razor between passes. Mice protection and slickness. The scent on this one is right where I like it. Strong enough to enjoy without being overpowering. A almond size or smaller gave me much more lather than needed but I prefer too much as to not enough for my shaves. VERY enjoyable shave !

You get exactly what's described and it paired nicely with Clubman Citrus Musk Aftershave. Nice to have Shannon join us here at DFS and looking forward to trying more scents she has to offer.

Poggio dei Pini t. (Mystic Water) pine & flowers

Stearic acid is the backbone of most soaps. Look at your label and you’ll usually find it listed among the first three ingredients. Mystic Water, however, leads off with tallow. Stearic acid is number 13 on the list. So what’s holding this soap together? It looks like tallow, Castor oil, glycerin, and Shea butter do a lot of the heavy lifting followed by avocado oil and palm oil. Building a lather takes some careful loading and a lot of brush & water work, but the results are worth it. If you prefer a slick, juicy lather with the finest grain possible and a finish that’s as plump as pudding, sink your brush into a tub of Mystic Water. Today’s scent, Poggio dei Pini, is a very floral interpretation of pine. I’ve had it for years and it still smells quite flowery. Noble Otter’s Trail does a better coniferous floral, but it’s hard to beat a MW finish.

   

The brush-and-water work must've eluded me: using perhaps three grams of a sample, the airiest, frothiest foam ever encountered ensued.  Operator error, likely.  If the answer is, "Use more soap," there will be only two more chances to make it right.

In the past, I had great difficulty creating a top lather with MW. It is finicky in that hydration is the key for me. Slow multiple water adds as I build the proto lather were key to unlocking this stuff. Early heavy water results in this wispy foam that can disappear on your face. Develop a thick okra snot slowly in your knot, then build the water profile slowly. It is the best finish in the biz.
