I've been looking forward to using Horizons and I was not disappointed.  I actually used the aftershave yesterday as a fragrance just so I could enjoy the scent.  This is one of the few aftershaves that actually has some longevity to it.  When I opened the soap container I initially thought this was going to be a firm soap and I could lather from the tub.  Then I pressed my finger into it and decided it might be too soft for that.  Went to scrape some up and just below the surface the soap has an almost cream like consistency.   So I just heated up my copper lather bowl a bit, smeared some soap in it and quickly loaded my brush.  First shave in and my initial impression is that I couldn't be happier.

To everyone who had a hand in bringing this soap to fruition, well done.

Shave 5

This is the perfect time of year for shaving. I’m enjoying smooth shaves using tools and soaps that might cause irritation in the hot and sticky months. The recent cool weather – temperatures rarely get much above 70°F inside the shack – keeps my skin cool and happy. To celebrate, I’m diving into my collection of Abbate y La Mantia soaps. They have unique and authentic scents that I love. While I may find the lathers a bit light once the warm weather sets in, the finish is consistently fantastic thanks to the ample Shea butter in the mix.

This is a quirky brand, full of surprises. Take a look at what I found on today’s label. That’s right, there’s a little devil tucked into a forest of St John's wort. He’s carrying a damned soul to a toasty spot in the eternal fires of hell. I have no idea what it's doing there. Damnation isn't usually what comes to mind when I’m shaving, though I have to admit I’ve had some lousy scrapings that have left my cheeks feeling like they had been warmed by hellfire.

So far, Iris is my favorite of the three Maxima soaps I have used.  All three generate superb lather, but Iris is the most delightful to my nose, and the most easily approachable for me.  Ironically, I really can't say how faithful the scent is to an iris.  I say "ironically" because iris is one of my wife's favorite flowers, and among the many that she grows and and beautifully arranges to grace our table with their beauty and fragrance.  I am certain though, that the scent is lusciously floral, as well as very clear and present.  Paired with Dior Homme Intense, a mildly contrasting floral musk, this shave was a real treat.
