Vetiver, that aromatic marvel from India, once charmed the sweltering masses before the era of air conditioning. Fans were made of its fibers, and its oil flavored chilled libations. But in the absence of modern cooling, vetiver was mainly used to make “tattas” – damp woven panels that scented the evaporating air with the crisp smell of vetiver.

In 1858 a reporter from The Times of London described the living conditions of British officers in India this way: “If we could look at this moment into some of the tents or bungalows of an up-country encampment or station, we should find every unemployed officer stretched upon his little cane-bottomed bedstead, gasping. He has a capacious tent around him, a double roof of canvass over his head; a light punkah, suspended from the tent poles, swats to and fro, and, pulled by a native squat upon the floor, keeps up a constant agitation of the air. Perhaps our officer's only garment is a loose pair of cotton trousers. Another attendant is shaking a bottle violently in saltpeter to produce some cool drink. To orifices in the tent are fitted square pieces of framework filled with the perfumed grass kus-kus or vetiver; a servant outside is continually pouring water upon it, and the quick evaporation produces, we were going to say a refreshing coolness, but can only write a reduced temperature.”
