“Manna di Sicilia” is the sweet sap extracted from the ash tree commonly found in Sicily. The branches and trunk of the ash are slashed, and then the sap drips out forming long crystalline sticks of manna. This is pulverized and employed in traditional Sicilian cookery. For instance, manna is used in making almond biscotti. Saponificio Varesino, however, doesn’t stop with the kitchen. It claims that manna also deeply moisturizes and softens the skin after shaving. Does it work? I’ll be honest. This soap leaves my skin feeling dry at first. But in a few hours all the waxes and butters and oils in the soap start kicking in. My skin feels better and better as the day passes. The scent? Well, we’ll talk about that tomorrow.
Whiterook, congratulations on finishing Sea Spice Lime! That’s a great smelling soap, but Black Watch may be even better. The only thing is, Black Watch is so soft. Mine’s nearly a cream. It's taken me a while to get used to it, but I'm sure you'll enjoy it. I wish you many happy shaves with it!

Thank you! I don't see my Black Watch as being that soft, so maybe this was a firmer batch. I do like the scent better than the Lime but I haven't decided if it tops the Heather.

Manna di Sicilia (Saponificio Varesino) bitter woods

Here’s how Saponificio Varesino describes the scent of this soap: “The slightly citrusy top notes of bergamot and orange of the Manna di Sicilia fragrance are well balanced by aromatic notes of sage and traces of fenugreek, a prelude to a warm body note with a slight hint of honey that gives a hint of tobacco and spices, softened by floral traces of jasmine and geranium leaves. The base note is woody and amber of patchouli, cedar wood, benzoin resin and guaic wood to make the memory of the perfume warmer and more full-bodied.”
That sounds awesome. But I’m afraid the actual scent of my puck is a rather bland woody concoction. I get no citrus at all, maybe a touch of sage and fenugreek, some amber, and lots of wood. It’s dark and bitter with occasional sweet spots that remind me of a drop of warm honey slowly sinking into a piece of burnt toast.
