Did you ever love something so much you didn’t dare use it? Maybe a truck that never left the garage, or a fishing pole that never caught a fish, or a shaving brush that just sat there on the shelf looking pretty. I’m that way about books. Patrick Leigh Fermor’s A Time of Gifts is a perfect book, and I’ve never finished it. It’s a long recollection of a walk the author made across Europe in 1933, when he was still in his early twenties. Every sentence is exquisite, every word is an education. I’ve never been able to read more than a few pages at one sitting, the prose is so rich, and the thought of it ever ending is unbearable. But this summer, with plenty of quiet hours to fill, I’ve taken it up again. Even though I don’t expect I’ll ever turn the last page, I’ll love every minute I spend with it; and since much of the walking and talking takes place in Germany, I’ve unpacked my last puck of tallow Tabac, and I’ve dug up my trusty Merkur 42 razor to be my traveling companions.
