Spitfire (Phoenix & Beau) leather juniper

Phoenix & Beau is a family business run by Kerry and Sarah Burrows in Hertfordshire, UK. The fragrance of Spitfire is inspired by memories of Kerry’s grandfather, who served in North Africa and Italy during WWII. ‘Papa’ was known for his love of pipe smoking and had a distinct aura of leather and tobacco that seemed to surround him. To capture those memories, Kerry combined notes of juniper and bergamot with cedarwood. These were then laid over a warm base of leather and tobacco.
Well, that was the idea, at least. But truth be told, I’ve always had a hard time finding any tobacco in the scent. My tub of Spitfire comes from Kerry’s first batch sold Stateside way back in 2016. As I recall, there were some problems. The soap had a strong ammonia note that I can still detect seven years later. I suspect something in the tobacco went sour. After it gassed off, what was left was a nice leather and juniper. The bergamot is long gone. In spite of all that, this is still a wonderful smelling soap, and once this tub is done – sometime around the middle of the month – I’ll be sorely tempted to order another.

Vetiver is fabulous and MdC Vetyver doesn’t “church it up”. Give me the root of the plant and I’m a happy camper. I really like the clean feeling of a Martin De Candre shave. It’s plenty slick and protective but leaves me squeaky clean. Drying? Don’t know because I most often use an after shave application of raw Shea. Sure do like that Vetiver and rubber scent though. Reminds me of the smell hen I crack the valves open on a boat at the end of a river trip. And that fattie brush! 30 mm of soap gobbling goodness. I’m running really low on soap. Any of you gents got some Vetyver you need to unload?
