I woke last night to the sound of thunder, something rare in these parts. The storm was far out to sea, and the flashes of lightning appeared long before the sound of the rumbling made landfall. What a delight to lay my head quietly on my pillow with the windows wide open, the night air filled with smells of the ocean, and the wet earth, and the freshly cut lawn. It smelled like spring. Truth is, spring down here is sort of constant state for months on end. The season starts in December and runs through the end of June, when summer begins properly. So just two warm seasons here. I mow the lawn fifty-two times each year. And the scents of each season are around so long they just sort of fade into the background. But the smell of green is always in the wind, so there’s plenty of time to enjoy the fresh, green fragrance of this classic fougère.
