It’s as if winter has been a mere mirage, a dream we all somehow shared. Overnight temperatures rose ten degrees, and I awoke to the sultry days of summer. With the arrival of this sudden heat, my interest in woody and spicy scents has faded away. Now is the season for chypres, an accord that I’ve long admired for its blend of citrus, florals, earthy woods, and resins. It’s an island scent that works as well in the tropics as it does in the Mediterranean. I often wish that more soap makers would explore this aroma. Like the classic fougère, it can be endlessly reinvented.

Today Barrister & Mann’s Le Petit Chypre grabbed my attention with its triad of petitgrain, oakmoss, and labdanum. There’s nothing more to it, and yet it is so perfect.
