Traveling this week - used my baby 4 days. This is a great daily fougère. The new base does have a slightly different scent vibe - not quite as green and loud... .but the base lathers slightly better as I noticed the residual slickness has been increased [several other shave blogs have noted same].

As this week with Arctique draws to a close, I’m looking back on every shave with satisfaction. Yet my nose detects a rather disappointing trend – the scent seems to have faded considerably. It was only last Saturday, as I first lathered up this soap, that the overpowering aroma of peppermint had me reeling and rubbing my eyes. However, today as I stepped into the bathroom, I could barely detect the fragrance from the puck. The menthol too, has lost its potency, or perhaps I have simply grown accustomed to it. After today’s shave, the chill lingered for a scant ten minutes. On the whole, it was a good week, but from time to time I wished for a more intricate scent. Truth be told, there were moments when it smelled as though I was scraping my chin with toothpaste.

A note on today’s picture: In the last months of 1911, Robert Falcon Scott led the British Terra Nova Expedition in their attempt to be the first to reach the South Pole. With grit and determination, they overcame a barrage of obstacles and finally, on the seventeenth day of January, 1912, they stood at the very threshold of their coveted goal. Alas, it was not to be, for to their dismay, they discovered that their Norwegian counterparts, led by Roald Amundsen, had already laid claim to the coveted prize.

The countenance of the team in this photograph, taken shortly after their arrival at the Pole, betrays the depth of their disappointment. Yet they soldiered on, braving the harshest of conditions and dwindling supplies in their return trip. It was a journey that would ultimately lead to tragedy, for Scott and his four companions fell to the elements they had so valiantly defied and were finally embraced by the cold.
