In the wake of yesterday’s harsh thrashing with a stiff boar brush, Windsor still holds its weight. Such news might break a lesser man’s heart, but my love for this soap is unwavering. Instead, I’m left in awe of the density of the puck, and I find a certain satisfaction in working with a product that lasts. It brings to mind my grandfather’s auger, a tool so sturdy that its construction seems to defy the laws of nature. The steel is a beautiful blue, and the wooden grips are harder than iron. Made in the 19th century, like him, it was built to endure the ages. And endure they did – my grandfather lived to be 104, and his auger is still sharp, boring straight and strong. We’ll pass it down to the next generation. Now, when I lather this soap, I can’t help but wonder if it, too, will outlast us all.
